Default Notes on Throttle Cables

Recently I have been experiencing a little hesitation off idle, and more backfiring that normal. The hesitation doesn't bother me, it is what it is. I attributed the backfiring to increased heat recently.

I have been saving up to replace all the rest of my cables, and finally installed new SS throttle cables and clutch cable.

I immediately noticed quicker response off throttle, and the hesitation and backfiring are gone. I also noticed my throttle grip is now much "looser" and I can actually see the pull cable jumping when I throttle up or down. In fact it was kind of weird at first to see that cable flexing and moving, something I hadn't seen for a long time.

My conclusions are two-fold. I think I probably had my throttle cables stretched a hair too much (my new ones are 1 inch longer, and easily reach now) and the old ones just didn't move as freely due to dirt, grime etc.

I have noticed several people recently commenting on hesitation off idle. Or that they have done the AIS blockoff, and are still experiencing popping and backfiring.

I suggest checking your throttle cables to see if they are too tight or need lubing. Does the throttle sleeve move freely and snap back when you release it (in your garage, not on the road ). Do you see the top (pull) cable moving when you increase throttle?

Just thought I'd pass along a tip I've basically forgotten because I've been riding the crap out of my bike and haven't noticed the throttle cables in forever.

This might also be the solution to those who feel their Cobra Autotune is hesitating off idle.

cool thing about internal throttles is you can use bicycle brake cables for throttle cable. PLENTY strong for pulling a little throttle body and they're cheap and much easier to hide

You catch that hint LD?? EH?EH?

Oh, I agree But you have to pay for all the other parts to set it up for internal. Whereas all I bought was a cable

Love your avatar BTW

Also -It was definitely easier to get to since I have a VBAK, but the fact is you can get to the throttle linkage from the left side. If you take the AIS cover off, and then remove the one screw holding the drybreak and let the drybreak hang free (after removing the tank of course) you're pretty much looking at the throttle linkage. So you can get to it pretty easy -it was actually how I got it on and off anyway -not through the top.

Hope this helps

Nope, my cables are fine, and the bike failed emissions (VERY! rich at idle) with the Cobra connected. With it disconnected it passed emissions easily and the off idle hesitation was gone, but otherwise ran like poo (obviously too lean, but at least I made the gubment happy by disconnecting it long enough to get my sticker)

You have to emissions test your bike in AZ? I live in CA and even we don't have to do that. I am surprised.

As far as I know we are the only ones who do.

Sorry to hear it didn't solve your problem Lazn. Glad to hear you passed though.
