The only times I thought a windshield would be nice were when I was doing a "catch up" day to get back on schedule. A few days I pushed between 500 and 800 miles, instead of the normal 200 to 300. I was pretty tired at the end of those days.

I did another 2000 mile trip the year before and between the 2 trips I decided after about 60mph you really arent seeing much you just going from one place to the next.
True enough. Interstate highways at 75 or 80 are for cars, smaller highways with scenery and twists are for us. Still, a small shield helps break the wind and allows you to get in more hours. No need for a high average speed unless you are trying to set a personal best for miles in a day or some such.

I love a trip with no schedule. just see where the wheels take you. Check in with someone at home once or twice a day, so they know where to start looking if you get abducted by aliens, or whatever.

I did my trip this summer with no windshield, having my gear stacked up behind me made the perfect backrest and 800-1000 mile days were nothing.
