Default Front Brake Reservoir-Help!

Several years back I bought a chromed front brake reservoir. When I received it the sight window waw yellow and no longer see thru. After some questions everyone I spoke with said theirs was the same way as the window is not removed before chroming. However, my windowhas fallen out. Is there a possible fix?

I've only seen this happen once before, and it could not be affordably repaired for long-term use.

Hopefully someone else will chime-in with a more positive answer, sorry its the best I can do on this.

If you get a new front master cylinder, remember the parts differ. 2002-2005 and 2006-2009. The 2010 CDN model is of course the same as the 2009.

The 2002-2004 part number should be 5PX-W2587-00-00. (added for clarity - seee below)

The 2005 (only)part number should be 5PX-W2587-01-00.(I understood this was the new part# but maybe not, verify)

The 2006-2010 part number should be 5PX-W2587-20-00. (not interchangable with earlier model years)(below alanh says it is)

My 2005 Master cylinder is larger than the one on my '02 or Lisa's '03.

If you can get your hands on a good one I don't see why you can't fix it with a two part clear epoxy. if it fell out it can be put back .I mean the factory did it somehow didn't they?just fix it and watch it for several days to make sure and test it on short runs. shame to waste chrome.

Hello Bruce, how are you doing?

I remember you and I looked into this some time ago for the Model Year Differences post. Good catch.

True, in 2005 the MC was made taller, and became 5PX-W2587-01-00. You might remember that I was digging deeply into this and not getting anywhere so I called yamaha in California. I guess I understood at that time5PX-W2587-01-00 became the updated part# 2002-2005, however I now see that Yamaha's parts website continues to list the original part# too. So I've re-checked the connecting parts and here is what I found.

The handlebar changed in 2004 and that model year had the shorter MC, so the diameter and placement position seems to have remained the same do you think? The 2004 and 2005 both use the same part#'s for the brake hose, and the MC valve, which means the plumbing and pressure are the same. The brake lever part# also remained the same up to 2005 (and beyond), and that seems to be the last connecting bit.

Just in case, since I only have hands-on with my 2003, I amended the post above for part numbers, check with the dealer haha!

THANK YOU BRUCE!

Maybe someone will chime-in. Brake fluid requires special attention (don't want anything leaching into it) and also loves to eat paint and many other materials. I just don't recall why the one repair I remember reading about failed.

Yes ... if you're worried about DOT4 compatability & RTV use synthetic DOT5 as it doesn't strip paint

Ground Glass Lens replaces OEM Sight Glass. Loctite or Permatex brand RTV Clear Silicone Sealant used SPARINGLY around the lip of the master cylinder hole and seat the new lens carefully in the counterbore. Allow 24 hrs curing time! New River Cycle Salvage: www.newrivercyclesalvage.com/index.html

That's a Fable....

All year MC's use the same piston repair kit. There is no difference in leverage either

The only difference is the later MC's are 3/16" higher and retain more brake fluid which will aid in cooling with the increased surface area!

The other difference is color.

Ali's MC is 3/16" higher and black for the '05': 5PX-W2587-10-00

FWIW ... there are 2-P/N's for the later years

Powder Black is: 5PX-W2587-10-00 & Aluminum clear coatis: 5PX-W2587-20-00

So maybe the later 2005 (only)part number5PX-W2587-01-00 is identical to the later 2006+ part number5PX-W2587-20-00. Its possible a human-error occured, like maybe the person assigning the '01-00' part number typo'd and meant to type-in '10-00' as would be more normal. If the Midnight part# had been assigned in the meantime, then they would need to jump to '20-00' for the non-Midnight version if they corrected it. Seriously, who knows, anything is possible.
