Oh wait, he's suggesting using a car battery charger. Well, you can jump start it from another 12 volt battery, just don't have it running...

actually, i was talking about a car battery OR a charger. i don't know if it really matters if the car is running or not. i know there has been enough posted about it both ways. but there should be no need to have the car running. if you have a low battery and you hook it up to another battery, it should start right up. so, yeah, err on the side of caution.

Most views are to never start a car with a motorcycle attached to the car battery.

You never want to jump start a bike/ATV off a running car or truck. You chances of ruining your voltage regulator are through the roof. I learned the hard way on a Shadow I had. I've had countless people on an ATV site I'm on try and and 9 out of 10 times they say now their battery won't charge....the culprit, bum voltage regulator.
Bottom line, don't. You don't even NEED to have a car or truck running as the battery in them is so substantially larger than that of a cycle or ATV, that the need to have the alternator run to maintain the voltage during the jump start is negated. All risk, no reward by having the car running. |
