Default Question for y'all with a VBAK

Can someone give me an estimate for the surface area of the air filters in the kits?

I'm going my own direction with this But I want to check that a filter with a 28 square inch surface will flow enough air for the motor

The filters flow 1.5 times the required CFM per cylinder.

Go to K&N.com for formula data.

Do you mind sharing the dimensions on the filters you use? I would appreciate it, thanks!

-Edit- I'm looking on the site, but can't seem to find any page with CFM data or formulas?

I've had Churchkey's VBAK for years now, and I went that way after having considered a DIY BAK and several other options because it seems to most that the velocity stacks are correctly tuned (and I agree) and the shapes fit the Warrior specifically meaning the K&N cone filters nest in the right spots between the top frame rails. I realize he doesn't make much (if any) profit on these, don't see how he could be at the price he sell them, but he's still right there with answers and help and those things meant a lot to me which is why I popped for the better system he builds for us.

While important, the intake system is more than just the filter's airflow, but I'll see if I can find that post for you. The motor will draw differently with and without velocity stacks, and differently based on turbulence due to velocity stack shape. I remember Woody provide his email address and sometimes even his phone number to help guys installing. Cool dude.

Hang on I'll get the url for that post.

There really are three considerations for the filter elements.

1) CFM

2) Physical dimensions for fit. Assume you have this covered.

3) Filtering capacity. The desired figure is 98% or better effeceincy using ISO 5011 testing protocols. So go for the higher capacity filter and largest you can fit with the best CFM flow and problem solved.

Thank you for that link! That's what I've been looking for

If I was going for a "standard" VBAK, I would go for Woody's kit without a doubt. His price is very reasonable for what you get, like you mention, I can't see how he has too much of a profit margin on them even.

But, I'm going a different direction than I've seen on here before... I'm going to be building a functional ram-air intake system, feeding both throttle bodies through a fabricated aluminum scoop on the right side. So I'll be using a rectangular air filter... I just want to ensure that the filter I choose will flow enough for the motor. And I do believe it will

Yes, I will try to take progress pics as I go along. I kind of regret not taking more pics of the exhaust as it progressed, so lesson learned

I like the idea you are on its like a mini/mild turbo. The higher the speed, the more the boost.

One thing that has been noted here on this thread and I want to chime in on. Woody is a super guy. I have had his bak for several years and even ordered a second one to install on my brothers bike. Once while trouble shooting my brothers bike and the yamaha dealer could not figure out what had gone wrong I spoke to Woody by phone. I described the problem Woody told me the fix. I told my brother, he relayed it to the stealer mechanic. Woody was correct and the bike got fixed. That was in the early days of cps failures and before yammie issued the recalls.

So I am sory to have high jacked the thread, but kudos to you for having your own idea on intake build. Kudos to Woody for helping even that means that is one sell he won't get.

Super guys make a super forum.

Church Key VBK is the best aftermarket setup out there I had barons setup previous to church's seat of pants difference even before the dyno tune-Patrick Racing makes a good one too but it is designed for a modified motor-churches works best for the stock motor. If you can design your scoop to provide air to a church key vbk youl do better you need to have the tubes on each of those thottle bodies
