I recently bought Avon air cushion grips. I changed everything out and it went smooth until I pulled back on the throttle and it sticks. It soesn't snap back. I reviewed all the other post and greased the cables, I looked for something to be twisted or out of place. I also sanded the inside of the housing so it could move freely. Still no luck. Could it be a bad cable? If so how do I know which one to replace or should I just replace both.

if you just did work on it, it's probably something you did, not a bad cable. but if you do replace the cable, i think they come as a set. maybe not, but if you replace one you should replace the other. having said that, did you have to un hook the cables in order to put the new grips on? and have you checked where they hook to the throttle bodies. i had a hard time getting that housing back together correctly. i'll bet it's something jammed up in there.
i should add that there will be a small gap at the bottom of the switch housing when put back together. Last edited by iowawarrior; 07-10-2012 at 09:02 AM. Reason: info |

There could be a couple of reasons.
1) You said you sanded inside the housing. Does that mean the throttle sleeve? I had to sand inside the throttle sleeve to get it to move freely. I took a piece of doweling (about the thickness of a broom stick, maybe a little less -I had it laying around) and wrapped sandpaper around it and stapled the sandpaper in place. Then I put a lag bolt in the other end. Then I put a nut driver in my cordless drill so I could spin the stick. Then I put it inside the throttle sleeve and really cleaned up/sanded the inside. It made a huge difference. The point about greasing the bar is good too. 2) The cables are too short. Shouldn't be a problem though, since you didn't change the bars. 3) The cables aren't hanging freely now. This could possibly be your problem. I discovered that depending on how you run the lines down past the headlight can really make a difference. To confirm it's not the cables themselves, you can take the grip off the bar and twist it back and forth. If it moves freely then it's not the cables. If you do buy cables, you should buy both. You have to purchase them separately. One is called the pull -or throttle- cable, and one is called the push -or idle- cable. Good luck

I took my computer outside and followed everything that everybody here posted and also followed the directions that came with grips (which included the sleeve). I bought the bike about a month ago and the old grips did the same thing. I just called the dealership and told them that they need to fix it while it's under warranty.
It has aftermarket bars and grips. It's nice having cruise control...lol The dealership said return spring or a cable is worn. I will let everyone know what they tell me. |

I had the same issue when I put new grips on. Went I put on my baron's flame grips I had to cut off about 3/16" of an inch off my aftermarket bars to keep the end of the grip from hitting the bar end. I filed and sanded it smooth and it's been fine ever since.

I also had the same problem with my ISO grips. I sanded the bars and removed 1/8in of the end of my bars. I also greased them and tighened my throttle cables. Make sure the cable is not pinch/bound up somewhere. I have always got my throttle cables as a set.

I had the same problem after changing bars and grips, throttle would not snap shut.
The problem was fixed after dismantling it and re-fitting carefully! one of the cables wasn't sitting right in the groove! |
