Default engine off coasting

Seems that I recall reading somewhere to avoid doing this. Maybe it was another bike.

My new house has a sloping drive to the street, and then the street is downhill for a bit. Will it hurt anything to coast the bike with a cold engine off for 50 yards every time before cranking the engine? Does it matter if the clutch is pulled vs being in neutral?

Trying to be a good neighbor...

If this has already been answered, please pass along the link.

Thanks

No problems with doing that.

if you are going to coast in neutral I would make sure the clutch plates are freed up first

Not good. This will cause damage to the engine. The engine and transmission are lubricated well only when the engine is running.

if you're in neutral, the engine is not moving, is it. or the transmission?

Don't tow your bike that might cause Transmission damage, but a roll of fifty yards is not a problem, you got to be able to push your bike sometimes, walking speed you can push it 100 miles if you want.

OK, so the way I read this is you want to coast to the bottom of the hill, and THEN start the bike.

No problem. I personally would want it to be in neutral, but if you had it in gear with the clutch pulled in it shouldn't matter.

I will say this though -make sure you let the bike do it's normal start up routine before you start it. If you just roll down the hill and flip the key and hit start it may screw it up. The fuel pump has to prime etc.

Edit: You could also prime the pump at the top of the hill, coast down the hill in 2nd gear with the clutch in, then pop the clutch and start it at the bottom of the hill -just for fun

I do this every night when I come home from work at midnight or 2AM. I put it in neutral and shut it off about a half a block away and coast into my driveway and up to the garage. It keeps my dogs from barking which keeps my 18 month old from waking up, which keeps my wife from bitching at me.
