Default Transmission Service

I bought a new 2009 Warrior last year and love it. My one complaint is about noisy and sometimes sticky shifting, especially from neutral to first, and from 1st to 2nd at lower RPM.
I want to switch to a synthetic tranny oil, but everything in the manual says the tranny muist be serviced by the dealer. Why is that?
Is there something I need to know before I attempt this myself?
What is the best synthetic gear oil to use?

Can't answer your question about servicing tranny, but can tell you 99% of shifting problems are due to clutch needing adjustment. Make sure you only have about a dimes thickness at the lever for free play and you should be good.

Transfer Case, right?????

Mobil 1 75-90 Syn, works great.

Search around, most of us do most all our work ourselves. Transfer case oil is easy. I made a slotted tool to make taking that cover off and on simple....I use an adjustable wrench on it.

That could be part of it, I have way more than that at the lever.

Thanks for the tip.

I figured it should be as easy as one would think. I was concerned about the manual (repeatedly) saying the service needed to be done by a Yamaha shop.

Thanks for the reply.

Here's a link to an original post from way back on how to service the transfer case:
HOW TO: Transfer Case Oil Change

Post #38 shows the drain plug, the fill and overfill ports. Read the thread but don't start by removing your pipes. There are ways around not taking off the pipes. I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90.

1) Totally agree about adjusting the clutch cable properly
2) Switch to a good synthetic motor oil for the engine (a motorcycle recommended oil, not an energy saving oil). The clutch uses this oil, and you will notice a difference
3) Powerwash where the foot shift lever pivots. It can build up a lot of grime. Every time I do this point (and the kickstand pivot point) I notice a huge difference in how smooth it shifts (and the kickstand works a lot easier too).
4) I'm not sure if it's really tranny oil. Transfer case oil just oils a short chain and a couple of gears I believe. I'll actually be swapping my cover out this weekend (hopefully) so I could confirm that, but I think that's right. Anyway, that's not the transmission. That might improve it a bit (changing your transfer case oil), but more as a preventative measure, not as a way to increase shifting smoothness.

-Also, that might be why you keep reading that the tranny is to be serviced by a tech. The transfer case isn't the tranny. Big difference.

I changed to Mobil1 10w30 Synth car oil and I LOVE how easy, smooth, and quiet everything has become.

(This is NOT the recommended oil for this engine, use at your own risk!)
