Default "loping" idle

Okay, let me get my apology out of the way for being so shallow. I would like to know if there is any way to adjust the PCIII or something else to give me the lope at idle. I know it doesn't do anything for real performance....but it just sounds so cool! Mine is an '02 and just want it to sound like the beast it is.

Not really. The problem is you have to have it idle at about 950 rpm to keep the oil pressure up (among other things). To get that lope you have to drop it down to like 650. But that opens up a can of worms as far as it running properly. Just for fun, try it though (for a minute or two) and you'll hear it. But it will cause problems later. Probably half the problems members post on here were solved with setting the idle properly.

For sure cams and related are the correct way to lope this big cube machine and it does
sound nasty when its done. To me, best of all its not a harley lope. Sorta spendy tho.

The lobe separation angle(LSA) is what gives you that nice loping sound. The aftermarket cams for our bikes have a wide LSA which tends to have a smoother idle. From what I understand the LSA is ground into the cams when manufactured and cannot be changed. Lift and duration can be altered which is what Patrick Racing has done when you send your cams to them. The factory LSA is 118 degrees according to Nigel Patrick. A nice lope from cams for our bike would be around 114 degrees or less. To little LSA is bad for vacuum. Since we have an absolute manifold pressure sensor I am not sure what the effect would be going to a smaller LSA. Having the idle to low seems to mess up everything so I am assuming a smaller LSA would do the same. Any corrections to the info I posted is welcome.

That's great info. Somebody has a youtube posted here someplace with their speedstar-cammed Warrior idling at spec 850~950 rpm. It sounds better than stock cams to me anyway.

I sometimes wonder if the HD"s with a lot of lope are idling too slowly to support their magneto and oil pump, but its something I never got around to looking into.

There are many manufactures that sell cams for Harley, some with LSA as low as 103 degrees. HD also has there firing order to help with the sound. I have the speed star cams. They do sound a little meaner. The higher compression pistons help a little also, not with the lope but more pronounced.

Since I have understood from fooling around with hot rods for many years that the reason a competition cam makes an engine "lope" is indirectly because of low vacuum. But, the low vacuum causes not enough fuel to reach the engine at idle. So, would adjusting the fuel map to run very lean at less than 1K RPM have the same effect? We don't spend much time idling so I wouldn't think it would damage the engine any. Thoughts?

Op......i hear ya. I had a 120 Merch Confederate that had a lope so mesmerizing that the sound was almost better than getting laid......almost. Even with cams its never gonna have that old school, non fuel injected, cammed lope. Ive tried!!
