Default 10yrs old and she wants to show her age...

I have a 2002 Warrior....

The Symptom:

Riding at normal speeds 75-85 on highway, and the bike cuts out, I can either wait to see if it cuts back on, or I can downshift OR upshift and get her back running before I get run-over by the big rig behind me.

Anyone have similar problems that can shed some light on this issue?

As always, thanks in advance...

Not an expert, but CPS (crank position sensor)?

is it associated with a certain speed or a certain rpm range? does it start stuttering or does it shut off completely? without upshifting or downshifting can you throttle through it?

Common problem.
Check the little coil wires, re crimp them, be careful
Also check lean angle sensor, side stand, rectifier wires. Put a little dab of dielectric grease on the connectios.

Also make sure your cps recall was done.

I also like to check the tank vent lines too

What visual clues to you see when it happens? For example, when it cuts out do the gauge lights go out or does the tach sweep as if you just turned the key on? Also, does it happen only when riding between 75-85mph or was that just an example speed?

It is your lean angle sensor. Search for thread "loss of throttle response". Page two I describe the fix and voila. Same thing happened to my 02. I will go out on a limb and guarantee this will fix the problem. 15 minute fix with a dab of superglue. 0 dollars. Or replace LAS. http://www.yamaha-forum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=480
When the LAS shuts-off the fuel I was thinking the rpm falls to zero?

[Added: srwarrior, see manual page 1-16 to follow what we're talking about]
It does not fall to zero. With his current miles I would almost guarantee the Lean Angle Sensor if all recalls have been done. The Lean Angle Sensor is behind your horn at the front pulley. Pop the horn off. Remove the nut holding the bracket for the LAS. Break down the LAS. And put the tiniest dab of super glue on one of the pivot arms to hold it in place. The pendulum will not swing now. Reassemble and go for a cruise. If problem is solved then you can make the decision to replace or leave it be. This is a ten minute operation. If you search for LAS in the forum you will find a thread with a link to an R1 forum with great pics of the switch. I went nuts trying to figure this problem out and the fix is truly simple. Try this first. If the problem persists you can go back in the LAS and break the dab of super glue so your switch works normally. The tiniest dab is key. You can check my thread "please help diagnose" to verify symptoms.

The symptom of being able to shift and the throttle come back to life is the key telltale for the LAS problem. As well the speed it occurs. Identical to my initial symptoms. I think as the pivot arms wear a bit and the harmonics the warrior produces at around that speed the sensor pulls back away from the sensor pickups tricks the sensor into thinking the bike is tipped when actually it is shifting towards the rear of the bike.

Ok, I have a couple of questions which might help / be irrelevent to your current issue. when your bike is not in neutral is the neutral light illuminated? if so does it go off / on at any point outside of neutral?

I ask because my light was on and my bike quit on me at 90 mph on the road and it turned out it was the freaking relay going out....got to push my warrior turned paper weight uphill because of it.

here is a link to my thread if you are interested in my trouble shooting ect.

2002 warrior won't start after quitting in middle of road

if this sounds like your issue you might want to order the part I did and see if it fixes it, its a whole lot easier than pushing the bike up hill / having it die on the highway at rush hour.

best of luck and let us all know what the problem finally turned out to be.

Not associated with any particular speed, doesn't always happen either. No stuttering, just shuts down and yes, I have been able to throttle through it to get it back running.
