Alanh, thanks for the "look" you provided. I found that illustration way up in the "engine" section of my manual. I measure ~ .1 to .3 ohms from any pin to any other, using a Fluke 75 Multimeter, X1 scale. The plug isn't numbered in any way so I just measured from one end, to the middle to the other & did it starting from the other end. Covered all combos that way & nothing is "open". I can't imagine .1-.3 ohms delta in all the readings is enough to say "broken". It was hard to unplug those suckers too. I'm going to put it back together & ride it & see what's up. I'm starting to think it's that HID I bought. The "gremlin" that paid me that first visit, which started this thread, I'm thinking that could have been the battery. It was 6 years & 65k miles old, but ridden nearly everyday. I always had it on a "tender" when I had to park it outside, but for the past three years it's been garaged. Regardless, I have a new batt. so that's no issue. I just looked & it's 12.4v & been sitting for several days. That "gremlin" was prior to installing the HID kit, so that adds a bit of mystery. BTW the one I replaced was a YUSA, 6 years...

Default Unexpected electrical reset - bump

I still have an issue... I don't have an open winding, there could be a shorted one I suppose, but I can't make a definitive assessment. I thought that the "engine" light would come on if there is a problem in the charging system? Maybe not, huh? Also, the manual says that the charging system should put out 14v @ 5000 rpm, RED LINE! Are they kidding? I for one don't like the idea of running my, "unloaded" engine, with 104k miles, to red line in my garage, let alone my neighbors...
I've concluded that my charging system has a problem & I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow to see it they can diagnose it to the component. They owe me a little favor...

Well the fellas at the local MC shop came to the same conclusion as I did. "Looks like the stator is okay". So I went with that assessment & ordered a regulator. I got it for a little less than it would have cost me thru Yamaha Sports Plaza, up in Oregon. At first I didn't think that it was fixed since after I installed it I never got a "surge" of voltage to my battery. It just looked steady @ ~ 12.+volts. I wound it out a couple of times & never saw any "surge" so I concluded that I hadn't found the problem. I dwelt on it yesterday & when I got home from work I reconnected it but never hooked it up to my electrical system. I plugged the stator into the regulator & clipped on to the regulator outputs with my DVM, & started the bike. At idle I measured 17+volts! The alternator was putting out! I finished installing the regulator & rode in to work this a.m. It was 38 out so I used my Gerbings gloves (SWEET) on my way in & so far everything is a-okay! Toasty hands. Woohoo! I'll know for sure by the time I get home tonite. When my charging system was not working I could make it to & from work, but couldn't get into my garage 'cause there wasn't enough voltage left in my battery to open my garage door. I have a "Flash2Pass" installed, & it won't work with low voltage. So if I get into my garage after work tonite, I'll be satisfied that its' fixed.

I got it from a local MC shop in Santa Cruz. It came in a box labeled "Rick's Electrical" or something similar. I'll let you know after I get home. I got it for $161+ change, including our "fine" 8.25% CA sales tax. @ YSP, it is $165.00 before anything else is added... This is where I got it, in 3 days too, BTW...

It is/was also known as Santa Cruz Cycle Imports, so don't let the "Vespa" thing scare you off. It is where I've had my bike Dynoed; they replaced my drive belt & upgraded my '02 shock for an '04 unit; replaced my fork seals & have re-torqued my head bearings. All done with integrity, speed and at a reasonable cost. I'll get the name off the box my regulator came in once I get home. If you call the shop or anything the owner's name is Jim. They also sell Royal Infields.

I was a little apprehensive at the thought of running my bike off the battery alone with the whole bike disconnected from the regulator/alternator, but then I justified it by thinking that I've been running on the battery the last few times I rode anyway, so I went for it... I wish I would have taken the chance a week ago. I know this prolly isn't the best place to say this, but the Gerbings T5 heated gloves are so sweet, I think anyone who rides in the nasty stuff will really appreciate them. They are pricey, but I got them on sale for $144. I bought the least expensive controller for $70.00. I have heated grips, but the gloves surpass them for comfort. It boils down to the backs of my hands. They would freeze even tho my palms were blisteringly hot. With handlebar risers, my bat wing doesn't cover the backs of my hands well enough.

Hi AZ, The name on the box is "Rick's Motorsport Electrics Inc".
Part number is 27-10420.
The description on box reads: RICK'S REGULATOR/RECTIFIER YAM

The receipt has "Ziios DMS Powersports" at the top of the page.

Rick's Motorsport Electrics

You might need to be a dealer to buy from these guys... The guys up the street @ the Vespa shop, only charged me $149.95 plus $12.00 tax.

I think I've seen those on E-Bay.

On another note - heated grips, heated gloves batwing, and you live in California. Hmmmm, starting to question your toughness dude

104,000 miles and you FINALLY had to dump 162.00 into it. that seems like a deal.
