The California DMV should have that approval in their computer based on the MC's model number. Stickers fall off or get damaged. Maybe the DMV clerk is new or lazy lol.

On the '04' models the comprehensive label is located behind the Left Hand Cover

Thanks for the help ended up calling Yamaha and they looked up the vin and said that my particular bike doesn't have a EPA sticker because is is a 49 state version. Now California won't register or title. Didn't even know there was such a thing.

I think they are mistaken. That is for a new bike, if it has at least 7,500 miles on it, should not be a problem. Ask for a supervisor...
Also, there is an exemption if you had it registered in your state of residence while in the military: "Registered by you in the state of your last active military service outside California." From CA DMV web site.
