Default Quick ? about stock airbox

As per the title: I am about to head home from work, and I was going to remove the right coffin to see what I can do to it with a can of black plastidip. The question is this: do I need to remove the tank to get the coffin off, or just unbolt it and pretend to know what 'finesse' means?

You don't have to remove the tank to get the right side airbox off. It has a snorkel that goes up to the airbox under the tank. If you work it, you can pull it off. It's kind of a pain getting it back on, but it's do-able. If you loosen the clamp when you get it off, then pushing it back on later is much easier. You don't really need to tighten that clamp anyway.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I took a quick look at it yesterday when I put on my new cheap-o mirrors, but I didn't want to just start yanking on things. It seems that approach always ends in a mess.

You only need to remove the chrome cover and dip it, right? Its like changing a filter.

That was the original plan, yes. After attacking it viciously, I said "screw it", and taped it up while still on the bike, and covered the surrounding area. I then proceeded to dip it like that. I'll post pics shortly, I think I will be using plasti-dip to black out quite a number of pieces on the bike. I believe tomorrow I will take off the super cheap mirrors I just put on yesterday and start with them.

For future reference, should I have just looked in my owner's manual? Once I find it again, that is.

I think it's my new favorite thing. I'm planning on replacing the stock exhaust next month, and I'm going to dip the fenders and tank while I'm doing it. I'm going to be at my friend's house since he's both considerably more mechanically inclined, and has a proper set-up in his garage (plus a better selection of tools).

I'm thinking I'm going to put a base of black on tank/fenders, and then cover that with the "blaze blue" they have on dipyourcar. In the meantime, I'm debating whether just to tape racing stripes on it, or try to do flames.

And while I'm looking for the "what did you do today" thread, here's a pic of the cover dipped:

That's actually what brought it all to my attention. I cruised around on the forums at dipyourcar as well, so I picked up a can of black at the closest Home Depot on my way home from work yesterday morning.

Oh, sweet! I can't wait to see the blue... I was thinking about that color as well. Maybe I will try it next!
