Default Just bought a pristine Warrior. Almost had a heart attack at oil change

Hey all,

I just got a spotless 2006 Warrior with 3,900 from the orignal owner. He had all his maintenance done at his dealer. The bike looks absolutely spotless everywhere.

I go to change the motor oil today and ou drains about 8-9qts!!!!!
My best guess is that someone just drained the tank or the engine and dumped in 5 qts without checking anything. It's been like this for 1,500 miles.
How ****** am I? The bike seems to run fine but I did notice it had an oil burning smell at red lights once I got home.
I checked the oil at my test ride and it just a hair above the full mark. I'd never think it had 3 extra qts on there.

Thanks!

Im surprised you werent blowing oil out the breather. there is a whole procedure to checking the oil and unless you rode the bike until it was fully warmed up..the dipstick could read anything

I researched the procedure before buying the bike and have had funny dry sumps before.
I used a 7qt pan. First I drained the tank and about 5qts came out. Then I moved the same pan to the engine and it started to spill on the ground. I plugged the hole with my finger and got another pan. about 1-2 more qts came out.
This is my first warrior but im almost certain I didn't drain the drive gear oil accidentally. I put in just under 5 qts, warmed up and checked and now it's very near the full mark. I really think its had 8 qts of oil for at leas the last 1,000 miles.
I too am surprised that nothing (seemingly) blew yet.

When I checked the oil at the previous owners place it was above full; about where the dipstick screw threads end. I though maybe half a qt too much at most and didn't worry about it.

I posted this in your other thread as well

well no wonder it ran like a dog, when overfilled they run rich, don't like to rev, and generally lack response. No oil light on these, just the dipstick. Make sure the bike is good and hot when you check the oil (ie. ride 20 min) and then let it idle for at least 30 sec without touching the throttle before shutting off. Then check the oil. If you don't check it this way it is easy to over fill as it will read low when cold. There are many good videos on how to properly check the oil on here if you still have any questions.

theAmazingKickstand .... not to be argumentative but i don't believe the oil tank holds much more than 3 qts if i'm not mistaken.

I've done over 15 oil chg's to my ride over the years and my procedure differs from the Yami fill-up .... i always add 3 qts for the initial fill and there isn't that much empty space under the fill neck though i've never tried to see what remains.

I would have expected oil to overrun the fill neck when you opened the filler cap

Bottom line ... IMHO no harm done unless you have some leaks from static o-rings that will become obvious or the puke tube that runs out of the factory air intake or Vbak breather.
If you have the factory intake you can remove the top filter and take a look

Good luck with your new ride

I hope you are correct but I don't see how. I've use this pan to drain my Volvo which holds almost 6qts. Never over flowed.

I just got gas and checked the oil. My 5qts were at the very top of the check level. I turkey basted a hair out.
Did I have a serious brain fart? I have a hard time believing this thing can hold and run problem free with approx. 8 qts.

Argue away. I'd love to be wrong.

Kickstand, this would be a great time to ask you to post pics of your Beast! There's an Album space in your Member Profile. Plus there's also a Bike Tab in you profile where you can add specs and mods, too. Having your Beast represented and pictured in your Profile makes it easier for others to help you troubleshoot and its also fun for us to see what you are doing to it! Maybe snap a few pics?

i start to cringe anymore when i see things like "all maintenance done by dealer", like that's a good thing. it just means you have to go through it and find out what they did wrong. this problem has come up a LOT lately. welcome to the forum and get some pics up.
