Default Head/Stem bearings for Mortons raked trees?

Hey guys.

I have my 7 deg mortons trees here and eager to install them. But they didn't come with replacement bearings and I understand that you cant use the old ones as they are pressed on perhaps?
(03 warrior)
Also I noticed a heap of bearings on ebay that say from 2007 to 2010 -warior - did they change betwen 03 and 2007 or is it just the ebay sellers not knowing they were made in 03 too?

Anyway check out the price I was quoted from Yamaha here and the comparison to the ebay part I *hope* is compatible.

I just got this from my Yamaha dealer re installing the trees.
Please view my response and let me know if these bearings are compatible with my 03 warrior and the trees I just got from you?
They are trying to charge me a fortune for bearings I can get on ebay for next to nothing!
Thanks
Shakir Pichler

Subject: Bookings today

Hello Shakir,

Unfotunatly today we are compleatly booked out! I my self have fitted a custom tripple tree before and requires around 2 hours to do correctly.
You will need to get new steering head bearings, the next available booking for a job like this would have to be the Monday the 10th of December as we are booked out untill them.

For us to order the steering bearings for you it would cost $226.51 and we would not see them for at least 2 weeks.

BrutalPancho .... i'm guilty of not reading your OP but can tell you 1st hand that the Yami bottom stem brg can be reused as i've done it several times as have others. As i recall, from days gone by, the Mortons requires a thin spacer under the bottom pressed brg to produce or replicate the shoulder cast into the stock bottom triple tree to prevent crushing the seal.
  • There is a thread specific to this issue which i commented on and if time permits i'll return with the url.
To repeat myself, "the brg can be saved"

Can you tell if the spacer is included in this pic?

I've never seen the spacer that Morton ships but suspect that the washer in your photo is it and should sit flat against the bottom polished surface of the tree when the steering stem is pressed in place ... Is the stem pressed into the tree? if so the washer should touch that surface now imo.

Why don't you contact Morton for a confirmation of the spacer as i described or search the site for the post i discussed!

Yeah I have emailed morton.. they aren't as quick to reply as you guys though!
Plus Im on a different timezone
That washer is just loose and moved it up a few mm just to show it more clearly so I guess it will sit firmly when all is rigged up.
Have been looking at the stem posts here too.
Hopefully I can use old bearings. Dont want to wait 2 weeks for more to get here.
Its only done 20,000 K's or so.
Thanks bro.

I just got done reinstalling my factory trees after powdercoating. I HAD to use new bearings for I damaged my lower bearing removing it from the stem.

The quote you got is with LABOR. I purchased my bearings from the Yamaha dealer for like $30. I installed them myself. EASY!!!!! If you need install instructions let us know!

This bearing install project should only cost around $35 total, NOT $226

Mortons recommends using there bearing kit. Its listed on there website for $43.That is 2 bearings and races, plus the dust covers, at least that is what i call them. It says it makes the install easier, i don't know why unless there steering stem is a different diameter and using the stock bearings you might have to use your stem. I ordered the trees and the bearings from mortons just in case there is a difference. Hopefully they will be here by Friday. Good luck with yours.
