Well guys, enough is enough.....
No matter what I do in my basement to prevent the smell of paint upstairs in my house, I can't do it. I have polyed off all the ceilings and walls, built it into a compact space, and have an exhaust fan 2-3 times the size rated for the space, and still deal with the smell in the house.... more specifically, dealing with my beautiful wife's blood hound like nose it the problem,..... So with her blessings I am moving my spray booth out to the garage. This of course will require some basic remodeling of the garage to support this venture. I propose to cut section my garage into 3rds, wall off the back 3rd with either a removable plywood wall, or hang a drape style wall that I can slide back and forth on a cable to section off the spray booth. And I will install a new exhaust fan there as well. I knew this day would come....so it's here. Gonna be busy with this....for the next few days/weeks.....will let you know how it all works out. Any painters working in a garage in the cold weather with any tips would be appreciate. Heating the booth will be the challenge. Either I install a couple of electric base boards, or a free standing infrared heater..... Hope she knows this will cost her $$$$

Good luck. I work with wood, and the finish smell gets into the house and I have a 2 car garage. The last side, away from the house is the shop. I have it walled up, polyed, vented, and have a covered breezeway between the house and the garage/shop. Still the smell of the solvents come in with me or on me. Oh well, such is life. Hope it works out for you. Hate to stop what you love doing.

10-4 man, I get that!....
I can smell the stuff on me as I walk into the house as well. Maybe I have to invest in a couple of spray suits, that I can put on, and take off before entering the house....but it will be on my face and head unless I wear something there as well.....at some point.....it starts to not be fun any more. Like riding in cold weather with so much clothes on you can't even turn your head ![]() g Quote:

I know this well, I was without a car for 9 months last year. I had no choice but to ride in the cold. While I managed, it was not enjoyable. Good luck on the project!

Got one Randy.....
fact is, I spent 50.$ on a new/used wood stove, and well....long story short, my wife put a HALT on the funds to pipe it in. Plus...well....there's the open flame concern in a paint spray booth that I am concerned about....don't want to be working within a ticking BOMB...!!! ![]() Probably looking at a couple of electric base board heaters.....run the romex back to my panel and throw in a couple of breakers. Safe and quick.,... I only use the booth for short periods of time......and it would be easy to turn on and shut down. |

****** update ******
Ya, this anit gonna happen. Not yet anyway. After working up some costs to retrofit/build my booth in the garage, to the tune of almost $1,000. this aint gonna happen. Exhaust fan, compressor, plywood, studs, electricals, 100am sub panel service to support a 240v heater .......adds up fast. Got to figure out a better way to exhaust my basement booth...... |

I feel for you. In the summer I do my fibreglassing outside but when the fall hitsw unfortunately i have to move it into the garage. There is no way to keep the smell out of the house without going to a professional spray booth. If you are spraying paint for sure you have to keep away from any flames. Also if any of the products you are spraying have isocyanates in them then you need to invest in a spray mask that has a separate air supply that takes fresh air from the outside and pumps it into your mask If not you will die!!!!! Maybe you could try one of the infared portable furnaces. they are quite efficient and are reasonnably priced. another solution would be to use a pellet stove or a recycled oil furnace and put them away from the paint shop and have the heat pumped in by a fan.
