Default Day 1 of Michigan Deer season....

and I shot a squirrel!! Seen 5 doe but they were walking right in front of the sunrise so I had no shot.

After the neighbors light up the woods with gun fire I noticed this fatty about 90yrds out and 40ft up. Waited 10min for him to sit up nicely and shot him in the base of the neck. Still can't believe how nice this .17hmr is!!!!

(I should note I was deer hunting with my 12gauge but had the .17 for squirrels).

Have 3 others already in the freezer. Gotta get about 5 before you have enough meat for a full meal.

The lower part of Michigan it's illegal to use a rifle. You have to use a shotgun. I'm actually 5 miles south of the line where it becomes legal to hunt with them.

Shooting a deer with a shotgun? What is the states thought process for this? I am sure there is Some logical thought behind this. Right?

Maryland has the same law, it's illegal to use a rifle in all but the two western most counties. So in the rest of the counties and here on the eastern shore you use a shotgun with rifled slugs. The reason being in all but the two western most counties our geography is pretty flat (no hill country), the eastern shore is so flat when it snows the kids have no hills to sleigh ride down. So because of the flat land the extended range of rifle fire is considered too dangerous. Rifled slugs have a very short range and are considered more safe in flat and fairly populated areas.

Bingo! Basically flat, and populated. Even though most of my county is farm land apparently it's still too populated.
