Default Saving a rusted gas tank

Got a good deal on a generator. Checked everything out before buying. However, I didn't check the gas. I went to put gas in it a few weeks later and the gas didn't smell right. He said he just put fresh gas in it before I picked it up. I looked in the tank and saw "iced tea".

I drained out the old gas and saw a little rust. As I looked further I saw so much rust you could measure it with a ruler. At first I thought the tank was full of leaves. I have never seen so much rust in a tank. I don't know how the generator was running so well.

I decided to rid the tank of rust via electrolysis. I figured what the heck, if it doesn't work, I'll just buy a new tank. A new tank costs about $700. So I figured what the heck, I better save this one. Three days and three tank refills and it looks pretty good.

Now my question to you guys is, what's the best way to seal this all up. What's y'alls experience with coating inside a tank.

there's a two part system called Kreem if I remember right. I bought some to use on a tank once from the dealer and never got around to doing it.

Actually I don't know if it's 2 part or not. It was a long time ago...

Saw those two and KBS. Won't be doing it until the spring, so I have some time to research.

Have used the Kreem and POR in the past....both worked very well. One tip....before you use either coating....put a double handfull of b.b.'s in the tank and agitate the **** out of it...then take off any caps...petcocks....used compressed air...100lbs or better and blow the crap out of it. The more rust you can remove, the better the product will work !

+2 for POR-15

Did a Honda tank with electrolysis and POR-15 worked great, POR kit also comes with a patch kit for the outside in case there are any pin hole leaks after electrolysis

Take your tank to a radiator shop, have them boil it out, will strip the paint as well, then use the POR15, problem solved!
