Question Battery not keeping a charge

I have a 2002 warrior 1700, and the battery is not charging. Little frustated but dealing with it. I had the battery tested, and it checks out. I am now on to looking into the stator and/or the rectifier. How do I test the stator. And how do I test the rectifier. I don't want to replace things that don't need to be replaced.

Before I'd go through all of that, I would confirm it's the battery. I know you had it tested, but still...

Charge it up overnight, and check it in the morning. Then wait a few days, and see if it's dropping in voltage. Once a battery dies, it won't ever hold a charge properly after that. You can recharge it, and it might work for a few months, or a few days, but very quickly it will lose it's ability to hold a charge.

Do you use a battery tender when you're not riding it? If it sat out in the garage for a month, it could have easily lost it's charge, and when you fired it up, it killed what's left of it.

I'm just trying to save you some money before you go into all that.

Oh, and welcome to the forum

What voltage is your bike putting out while running? You want 13.5 to 14.5.

Adding to this in case you don't know - Put the Volt meter Red Probe on battery's Positive post and the Black probe on negative post. With the bike running read the voltage scale. If meter is displaying the above mentioned numbers, your charginging system is working. Meter should be on DC scale

I buy mid 80s Honda's and refurbish them for resale, after I get them running one of the first things I check is charging system. Not running check battery voltage should be close to 12v, then start bike and check voltage as 68ramair said should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts, give it a little gas while watching the meter meter voltage should increase. If you see a voltage increase it's probably not your stator or the rectifier.

Charge the battery to what you think is full. (should read 12.7 thru 13.4)

Find a DC load....could be a camping light or ????. If you have a 14aH battery, it should run a 2 amp load for 7 hours.

See what you have for a Load (headlight from a car is about 50watts (~.5 amp) so it should run for 28 hours on a good 14ah battery. This kind of load testing shows me the battery can take a full charge and give it back...

If I was unclear, hit me up and we can dig deeper.....IMO, I don't think there is anything wrong with your charging system. I have seen the rectifier connections come loose and exhibit the same problem. Check them and be sure they are fully seated.

Welcome and let us know how this turns out....er...I mean when you get a new battery...lol

I appreciate all the reply's. I will run the tests with the multimeter this weekend with the bike off and while it's running and post the results. Again...thanks for all the advice.

ive seen and heard of many a battery in these warriors that tested good but couldnt do the work in the bike , a battery change and those problems were gone. connections are very important on the warrior and they have a mysterious way of finding their way loose. btk572
