    Wide Tire Kit Clearance Question

With all the chatter its maybe time to look into this from a different angle.  If possible maybe the members who went with the Group Buy on Wide Tire Kits (about from Nov07-May08) would you want to chime in and let us know how your rear fire fits, if its centered or offset and what shims were needed to install the tire so it wouldn't rub?  Since the 240 width seems kay, maybe any member with a 260 or larger rear tire might chime in too.  Please try not to promote or bash.

Maybe just say what tire width and tire brand, what swingarm width, and if you had to shim to get clearance.  Is that good enough?

Thanks in advance for helping Yes

    260 swingarm

    8.5 in rim

    240 880 Metz

1/4 inch offset to the right

How and what would a person shim to compensate?

I've got an Avon VenomR 250 w/ 8.5" wheel on a 260 swingarm with no problems.  There is a slight offset but I believe the stock arm has the same offset....

I have a chrome 9" wide rear wheel with a Metz 260 wrapped around it.  Slight offest to the right, no shimming, clearance is all good............

5" over swingarm, 10" rim, 300 Metzler, no shims for wheel but a spacer was added to the front and rear sprocket for clearance reasons.  It hard to tell if there is an offset.  A few thousand miles and everything is fine so far... thought I had a red dust issue, turned out to be rust from the chain.

    OK back on topic!

Lets add "with stock rear fender" to the survey because that's a component of the problem.  Some 260-280 rear tires rub inside the stock rear fender unless shimmed or other mod done.  You wicked 300+ guys got a new fender!

Re: Wide Tire Kit Clearance Question

I have an 8-1/2" rim with a Metz 260 on a modified swingarm. It's offset to the right about 3/16" as best I can tell. When the bike is lowered the tire rubs the inner fender lip and welded nuts for the fender stays. I can move the wheel to the left about 1/16" by machining the left flange collar that is located on the outside of the pulley, Then make a 1/16" spacer to place between the right side of the wheel and the caliper bracket to make up the difference. Then remove some stock from the inner fender and the welded fender stay nuts.  I'll do this after the season is over.
