    5th gear mod

does anyone know which 5th gear to buy for this mod?if you look at the break down of the tranny there are 2 gears.one is a pinion gear which is 30 teeth and the other is called a wheel which is 24 teeth.or do you need both of them.they list seperate prices for each gear so i wasnt sure if you had to replace both because i fgured they would sell them in a set. thanks. zman.

guess this late you will find it hard to get these free. back when the road star tranny recall you could get these for free.

I paid for mine back then, I never saw it for free. But the labor was free during the recall. I think I paid about $150 for both parts.

I agree, it's my best mod, so far. I've got the best of both worlds, a Roady 5th gear and no Roady. [;)]

It's a little out of the way for you, but I can recommend a great dealer to do the recall. I had mine done at Kennedy's Yamaha and Kawasaki, in Elyria. I originally bought it from them in 02. Mike, the service manager is the only one who does all the recalls, and he has it down to a science. This is one dealer service department that I can actually trust. And they will do your pistons and roady 5th without giving you sh!t or charging you for it. Tell them Steve Reszler sent you. They know my bike well. I've bought 8 of my 9 rear tires from them and they mount get to mount them twice a year.

Seems like in reading all the threads, members who have done the mod, used the recall to keep cost down. Awesome but I have an '04. Anyone have any idea how much I'd be raked having the dealer do the work?

For a complete engine tear down, it would not be worth it, unless you did a bunch of other engine mods while you're in there. When the recall hit us, there were a lot of very pissed off people. Things like this were the one benifit all the earlier owners got for having our brand new engines torn apart.

    Sangathor,

So you're saying to do the 5th gear swap, it will require an engine teardown?[V]

That's correct. For the same reason the recall requires a complete tear down. It's the only way to get access to the gears.

I'm having some motor work done this winter the 5th gear upgrade sounds good. it doesn't effect the speedo in any other gear but 5th right?
