Do you safety wire your drain bolt?

Two things go me thinking of safety wiring my oil drain plug and I was just wondering if anyone else out there safety wires their oil plugs?

1) I was prepping my sportbike for track days so I removed the oil drain bolt and filler cap so I could drill a hole to accept a safety wire. And I ask myself why I have not done it for the Warrior as cheap insurance, especially with as much vibration that it makes.

2) Three days later Modit2max tells me that he went for a ride on his bike over the weekend. He just got done changing his oil and forgot to tighten his drain plug. Short story is drain plug fell out while flying down on the highway, he did not crash, lost all his oil and actually found the drain plug .5 mile from where oil started to pour out of his bike. Very lucky man he was.

If you really want to, I guess. With the proper torque, the drain bolt will never come out, but I guess with some things you can never have too much insurance.

what kind of torque wrench will actually fit in the small space in which the oil drain plug is tightened? I have only been able to use an open ended wrench to loosen and tighten the drain plug so I have no idea what kind of torque is on my plug.

I'm weird, I can tell by feel...[/emoticons/emotion-5.gif]

Funny you should mention this. Just this morning I forgot to tighten my drain plug. I got up early to change it before work, so i was kind of in a hurry. I got about 1 mile down the road and realized I forgot to tighten my rear drain plug. I got off to check it and sure enough, it was only hand tight.

I had to go back home to tighten it, which caused me to be about 10 minuets late for work.

I am not 100% positive on this, but I dont believe harleys have saftey wires on oil plug bolts.
Also...how many members have had problems with their oil plug bolt working itself loose? (that is if you remembered to tighten it down in the first place)

Don't know what a HD has to do with it but the safety wire is only insurance and I was just curious if others use it anywhere on the bike. While I have not heard of oil plugs falling out I have always heard of other bolts, nuts and fastners working their way loose and I did not want to use locktite there. But I do believe there is a loctite that is safe for oily environments.

I don't let those monkeys touch my bike. I was just making another stupid joke.

Hmm, not a bad idea at all. Seen plenty of safety wired fittings on airplanes over the years. Never on any of my cars or bikes and I have never lost one....and for sure I have not always been the one who torqued them down to begin with. For sure I won't with the KTM, that being a 2++ hour for me ordeal, to change its oil as it is without an extra dose of time to properly safety wire.
