Was just cleaning my bike and noticed that the edge of the right fork dust cover( rubber slider) has a very small crack in the edge of it. The bike has only about 8Kmi on it and has never had any oil leaks from the fork seals....my question is, how integral are the dust covers to the whole assembly and is there something that could be put on them to prevent drying/cracking?

p.s. on my S2000, I use a Honda factory product called Shin-etsu silicone greaseon all the rubber parts, especially the convertible top parts and after 5 years, all the rubber parts still look brand new.

Canyou post a photo of the crack?

The dust seals protect the inner oil seals from the elements & road debris. A compromised outer seal will shorten the life span of the inner seals, but the extent to which it will do that varies greatly with riding conditions and the amount of damage to the outers.
