fuel problem?

I commute 26 miles to work each day. Normally if my reserve light comes on at the beginning of the trip I still have no problem making it to work. The bike usually only takes 2.8 gallons after running on the reserve for 20 miles or more. Today the reserve light came on and the bike ran completely dry after 24 miles. I called a friend from work and he came with a can of gas. While I was pouring the gas in the tank we noticed gas dripping on the front cylinder head. There are two small hoses coming from the front of the tank that end just above the head. The first one has a check valve in the end and the second is just open. The second hose was dripping fuel. Now is the second hose the overflow and if so does it connect to the recessed cup in the top of the tank below the fuel cap? I know I didn't overfill the tank but some of the fuel from the can was dripping into the cup. Secondly is there a fuel filter in the tank under the seat and should it be cleaned after running dry? Does anyone else have a problem with the reserve light coming on very early at times and way too late at others?

As a side note 5 rice burners passed me by without stopping and 2 Harley riders came by and both stopped and asked if I needed help.

The leaking hose was the overflow from spilling gas around the cap, no biggie. I have run completely out with 26mi. on the reserve its wierd that you would only put 2.8g. after 20mi on reserve normally I put about 3.5g. after runnin on reserve for 20mi. When you are filling up do you wait after fuel reaches the top for it to settle down into the lower tank? When I see gas at the top of the tank I slowly put about another .25g. in little squirts at a time. You can remove and replace the fuel filters but I dont think you can clean them out.

It should not drip fuel on the cylinder head. There should be two rubber hoses attached to the left down tube that connect to the roll over valve & vent. If you have taken your tank off recently they were probably left unconnected.

I have not cut a tank apart but I would be wiling to wager the vent hose attaches to the inside of the tank very close to the filler.

Milage after the fuel light comes on is a coin toss at best. Kinda like reading a gas gauge. Just an indicator that you need gas.

Fuel filter is located in the reserve tank under the fuel pump. It should not need service just because you ran it out of fuel.

I got so used to the low fuel light coming on prematurely that it is like the little boy who cried wolf. This time it really meant it was low. When I fill up I stop when it reaches the bottom of the hole in the filler. With the stupid vapor recovery hose on the gas pumps and the extended risers on the handle bars it is a pain to fill up without getting any on the tank.

The vapor canister was removed before I got the bike. The hoses end right above the head. One has a check valve and the other is just open. I should probably extend them down to the bottom of the frame. Watching the gas run over the top of my hot engine was not comforting.

CA bike? Must be.

I removed the roll valve, hooked the two hoses together with a tee & added a long hose that exits down the center of the bike by the rear shock. No special reason other than to clean up the down tubes.

I did the same thing, T the vent hose and run it down to the bottom of frame.

I did exactly the same thing.

I never seem to be able to get more than 2.5 to 2.8 gallons into my tank no matter how far I go on reserve. I think I'm never getting the tank quite full (but I frequently managed to spill it on the tank!).

RedWarr, funny you should mention that... this thread got me wondering if that was possible. I did in fact place a straight plastic break (from FBF) in line and tucked it just under the side of the tank. So, the problem is caused by part of the fuel line being higher than the bottom of the tank? I guess the gas doesn't get siphoned even though the rear tank is lower than the front tank? And apparently the fuel line coming off the rear of the tank doesn't help?
