Fuel usage

This may seem a little silly, but I need some feedback before calling Yamaha. Since I purchused my warrior 2 1/2 weeks ago, I've filled up the tank twice. I'm not a "hot-dogger" and dont do burnouts or anything like that, and are a pretty conservative rider. At 78 miles into the tank, my fuel light comes on. That would give me an average of 25mpg? That can't be right. Already pulled out a spark plug to see how it was running. the tip was "ok" and the outside was black. The only thing I can figure is that the light is comming on to soon. Wanted to see what kind of milage everyone else is getting before I make the call.

Thanks in advance

Mine was real tight when I first picked it up and the mileage sucked but since it was broke in a bit it gets really good mileage. The only suggestion I might make is, see how much gas you're putting in it when you fill up. Is it burning enough to warrant the light coming on? This bike only holds 3.3 gal.

The main tank holds 3.2 gallons and the reserve tank holds .8 gallons. My bike has about 4700 miles on it. Last weekend I took a 200 mile trip on Saturday. We cruised at about 75 mph and when I filled up at 146 miles on the odo I could only put 2.8 gallons in the tank (52.1429 mpg). It is not running lean, the plugs look good and it runs very good as well. I think they just get better with age.[8D]

Lenny,
This is a huge engine with 5 gears, able to do 130 MPH. Other than keeping it at full twist all the time, I think the factor that will have the most effect on your mileage is what type of riding you do. Your mileage will be around 25 if most of your riding is around town in 1st, 2nd, and occasionaly 3rd gear.

Hi all,
I'm in the same situation as Lenny: got my Lady a couple of weeks back.
What I can say after 1200Km (750Mi) is that I can't do more than 200Km (about 125Mi) before the warning light comes on and that's a nice 16.7Km/litre (dunno how many litres is a gallon)! Anyway we're riding the big one, no wonder it burns some more gas.
What is a little tricky is that you have to find a gas station within 50Km (30Mi) and that's a problem in some occasion!
... maybe in 2005 Yamaha will come up with a turbodiesel version (heehee).

Madhawk, 200k before the light comes on is pretty good. Mine comes on anywhere from 130 to 200k depending on how I ride. Straight highway riding it's 200. In town or back country roads, lots of playing, and it's 130. I hold the bike level when fueling. This allows the air bubbles to get out and ensures I get all the fuel possible in the tank.

Thanks fopr all the imput guys, it realy does help. 3gal. is what i put in it when i fill up so I know its not registring wrong. Guess the ECU needs to adjust to driving conditions. And yeah, most of my travels have been in the city so far. (sigh) where are those open roads when you want them.....LOL

Thanks everyone

I typically get about 115 miles before the light comes on. It almost always takes 2.3 gallons to top it back off. I did notice that I got better mileage this past weekend out on the open road, 125 miles before light came on. Two weeks ago I wanted to see how far I could get before I ran out of fuel after the light came on and I got 29.9 miles before she died. I wasn't concerned about running out of gas as the wife was home and I had a tank of gas in the garage. The ironic part was that I died about 2/10 of a mile form the house. But at least i know how far I can go whan the light comes on. It might not be that great on gas, but who cares.
