This may be a lot to ask but I would like to know how to paint the gas tank and body work on my kawasaki project. The tank is metal and the body work is all plastic. I really dont know anything other than I should probably sand everything. I need to know what to sand with, if I need bondo, what kind of paint to use, and what to spray it with. Thanks for any help.

Whoa! thats a bit to involved for what I had in mind. This is a salvaged bike with three different colored body parts I just want everything to be flat black. The fiberglass stuff I think Im just going to sand with some 300grit and then spray with flat black auto touch up from Napa Auto parts maybe some kind of sealer on top. The tank is the tuff one. It has what looks like stickers under the clear coat so I dont know if I should try and scrape them off and then sand or what. I dont want to strip the paint and then do bondo and everything cause the tank is dented and that would require even more time and money. This is an EXTREMELY low budget project. I am looking for the route you would take when painting your sons dirt bike.

Bill,
I worked for a body shop for a few years (mostly repairing wrecked mechanical components- struts rads etc) and learned a little bit. If you just want paint to stick a nice even 300-500 grit sand job will do if there is existing paint (or clear). Plastic needs to be prepped with a scotchbrite pad (roughed up) and Bumper paint or something with a high polyurethane content must be used as it obviously flexes more than metal.
I you are fixing the dents in metal it has to be brought down bare, filled with bondo (please no drilling holes and using dent pullers on a tank), sanded smooth (use spot putty if there are air bubbles in the bondo), primed , sanded then painted.

So here is what I did with just the front fender so far, I cleaned with de greaser real good. Then I sanded with 320. Cleaned real good again. Then I sprayed it with sandable flat black primer (auto spray paint stuff) then sanded any blems with 400. Spray with semi flat black (auto spray paint stuff again) Now I am looking for a polyurathane spray on product to seal the deal. So far it looks cool, like a ducati monster or hondas new 919
