i am going to scream if i hear one more "explanation" of what the labeling of motor oil means!!!
this is how it works:
example 20w50 oil:
the 20 is the flow index, or how easily it will allow your engine to turn over. this is a rating done at ambient temperature. if you have a 20w50 oil and a 5w50 oil, the 5w50 will flow easier and let your engine turn over easier at start up.
next:
now we know what the 20 means in 20w50. the 50 means that at a certain temperature it has the vicosity of a 50 weight oil... here is the kicker, SO 5w50 and 20w50 oils, if subjected to the same engine conditions, have THE SAME rating!! they are only different at cold temps or better still at ambient temps. if the book says 20w40, use it.
this is sort of what many have thought, but 20w50 DOES NOT meen that the oil is a 20 to 50 weight oil!!
