first order a new shifter shaft seal. when you get it, index the shift arm on the shaft so you can put it back in the same position. useing a small sharp chisel tap the old seal in two positions at 90 degrees from one another untill the seal is loose then pry it out. carefully tap in the new seal with a blunt object or a metal or plastic tube the same diameter as the seal. good luck.

There is a seal there, but it sounds like they haven't replaced it, are damaging it when they install it, or are putting it in backwards. I don't have this problem, and like you said, I don't think this topic has ever come up before. If you pull the seal yourself, try not to damage it when you remove it and look for tears or nicks on the seal lip. Also make sure that the seal was mounted with the lip facing inwards. Other than that all you can do yourself is replace the seal, and check the sizes of the shift arm and housing bore where the seal fits. If these appear to be out of spec., you probably have a warranty issue.

 

Don't forget to inspect the shaft for nicks or burrs. This would cause the seal to fail also.

 

I had the same leakage problem, when they took the cover off to replace the crankshaft position sensor under warranty.

I went back after the leaking and they replaced the shifter shaft seal. No problems since the seal was replaced.
