Low idol to the point of stalling

my bike recently has been idling low to the point were it sometimes stalls out unless i twist the throttle. when i start it, it starts fine and idols fine, it starts to get finicky when i had it running and higher rpms like 2000 to 3000. after running at those rpms if i let off the gas the rpms can drop until it stalls. it helps if i engine break a bit before i pull the clutch completely to let it idol but i would say that works about 80% of the time. my guess is that there is a bad connection to the spark plugs some where or the air filters got mucked up some how (i haven't had time to check them yet). also when i gas it to accelerate it seems fine and cruising it runs fine too its only a problem when idling.

you can check those things and see whats up but the idle should be about 1000 rpmsor close and you may check the throttle position to make sure its set corrcetly ,i believe it should read0 percent at idle speed. the manual is your friend and the on board diagnostic system will help you alot learn how to use it ,if you ride at wide open throttleit probably wont have any idle problems ,lol

The first thing I would do is get the engine up to operating temp and then adjust the idle. Pull the seat and you will see a knob just aft of the gas tank. Adjust the idle to approx 950rpm. Then ride it around and see if your problem has changed any.

Re: Low idle to the point of stalling

If your idle is set for 950-1000, and it still runs rough. I would change out the plugs (all 4 and use the bag tool for the right front one). Youmay have a fouled plug from all the stalling. Other thing to check is that the coils are all tight and don't have any worn spots on the lines from them. You can call any Yamaha dealer and give them your vin and they can tell you if the recalls have been done.

Re: Low idle to the point of stalling

hey i know this thread is a little old, but i was reading through it and im getting ready to change out all 4 of my plugs cause i have the gas tank off, so i might as well do it now (only 10k miles on the bike). but i noticed that some of the plugs look like they are hard to get to.

any tips or pointers in changing the plugs out?

Put in iridium plugs so you won't have to change them again before the bike rusts apart!

I know this thread is pretty old but i figure it might help someone. Had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, bike was running fine after a 10k tune up then all of a sudden crappy low idle and running pretty rich. Bottom line, changed the spark plugs to OEM NGK's and still couldnt shake the problem.

Finally i noticed a crack on one of my vacuum lines. Replaced the connection tube that was cracked and voila! Bike runs like new. Do an indepth inspection on all tubes under the gas tank and this might cure the problem. Good luck!
