Is this the correct way to change the front pully???

Remove pully cover, loosen rear axil, make some slack in the belt, replace pully, re-position axil, replace cover. [B)]

IF you do not have an impact wrench you will want to get the pulley nut loose before you raise the bike up or loosen the rear wheel & belt.

Remove front cover.
bend the tabs of the locking ring back.
Put the bike in first gear.
Have someone sit on the bike & apply both brakes hard.
SOcket, breaker bar & cheater pipe over the breaker bar loosen the nut.
Be sure to torque the drive pulley nut to specs, 72 ft lbs.

BTW, Yamaha suggests a new lock tab each time.

We can go to 31T without a change of belt or other negative consequences. Correct??

Its a bolt in deal.

On the negative side you will eventually have to purchase new shirts & jackets with a longer sleeve length.
