Hey All,

I'm changing out my triple trees with some nice CI chrome ones. I have everything off including the wheel, forks, headlight, handlebars, etc... I did a search and didn't find answers to these questions. I'm sure I can figure all this out but I thought I would ask first before making my own decisions! [/emoticons/emotion-5.gif]

#1. How do I get the ignition out? Do I need to drill out the 2 bolts? Do I just replace them later with regular bolts?

#2. What size is the Triple Tree nut? It doesn't say in the service manual. Is it a 34 or 36mm?

#3. I searched and found that Warstar used a dremmel to cut the bearings out. Can this be pressed out and re-used? What did you cut out?

Jody -
#1 I drilled the bolts out. Started small, got bigger, finally spun off. Ignition comes right out. Yep, replace them.
#2 36MM - I guess you can use a crescent wrench, i "rented" the 36MM socket from Home Depot /emoticons/emotion-5.gif
#3 I took my tree and the new bearing i bought from Reza to the Yami dealer, they r&r for 1/2 hour labor.

email if you have any other questions.

If it can be pressed in, why not removed without using a dremel????? Also, why must the speedo bolts be drilled out??? I am curious to knowing since this is one of my upcoming winter projects....

Always gotta be a couple of steps ahead of me EHHHH.
Slow down and let the rest catch up ! *LOL*

Looks like mods are on the down-low for me, the wife and I are going to try 883 customs's tonight...

In my case, the ignition had to be drilled out because some brainiac at Yamaha put them on with about a gallon of blue-loctite. I tried just scoring them with a dremel and turning them out but that didn't work, then I tried wailing on them with an impact driver... that failed, too. So, a couple of seconds later with the drill, the ignition came right right out.
As for the bearings, they came out no sweat... and I used a bike shop's press (thanks, Rex!) to do the stalk for free.
After my initial jitters over doing this, it turned out to be a great afternoon project. My only whoops-factor was that the lower raked tree will not set the s/s brake lines back into the normal position, so we fabbed it a little with a longer bolt to make it fit.

Well on my bike, the ignition alan slots were welded/soldered closed. I guess tamper proof. I first drilled a small pilot hole right down the middle of the bolt then used a bigger bit to drill it out. It was off in a matter of minutes. I then had to use vice grips to get the rest of the bolts out. YES, they use LOTS of loctite. I also bought some 8mm X 16mm hex head bolts with a 1.25 pitch. At the same time I bought an 8mm tap/dye to get the excess chrome out of the ignition screw holes of the new upper triple. That's as far as I've gotten so far. I plan to finish it up tonight.

Almost done! I got the full fork tube covers on now and the Kuryakyn 2361 Amber turn sigs. The 2361 Sigs come with an alternative outer ring which is WAAAAAAAY better looking the the one picture on their website or Phat's Website. I'll post a pic soon. I just need a couple small wire plugs from Radio Shack and I'll be done!

Ed, I'll update the first post with a complete how to soon.
