Questions about Warrior engine design

1) Does the Warrior have a one piece crank case/block. What I'm wondering is that if you want to take the pistons out, you can go from the top by taking the jugs off or do need to pull them out from the bottom by removing the oil pan, crank, tranny etc? I'm thinking of performance mods and whether or not they're partial do-it-yourself type jobs or totally mechanic's jobs.

2) Are the cylinders Nikasil coated? I'd bet that they are, I just want to confirm.

3) Has anyone reported premature ring wear on bikes with ~20,000 miles? Any loss in compression or increase in oil burning?

4) Are there any obvious things that I should look out for when purchasing a Warrior with this type of mileage on it? Tranny wear, valve train noise/wear, steering head bearings, swingarm bearings, ???

Thanks for any input

1)the warrior crank is a single pin crank. You can replace the pistons by removing the jugs and heads.

2) Yes, cylinders are coated with Yamaha's version of Naskil, Nikasil, or whatever it is called.

3) So far there have been no reports of premature ring wear, and there have been several warriors with 20k+ miles on them.

4) The main thing you need to check is if the warrior you are looking at has had the required tranny recall done on it. If it hasn't, it must be done. One advatage of it not being done yet is that you can replace the pistons at the time of the recall for no labor charge.

Machman,

There is actually a plus to buying the bike prior to having the tranny recall done. Like Dice said, you can get alot of engine work done for a relatively cheap price. This is because essentially they have to pull the motor apart anyway to get to the transmission. So you save a bundle on labor. This gives you the ability to add high compression heads, or any other performance mod you can think of: speedstar kit, big bore kit, etc, etc. Not necessarily a bad thing.

If the motor has high mileage on it, think of it as having the opportunity to have the engine rebuilt with a bunch of high performance parts for essentially the price of the parts.

I know that this wasnt exactly your original question, but hopefully it helps.
