Hey, I just had an idea that I wanted to throw out. Whenever you're making a post out here that you think is really a good one that should be searchable later, like the one about the crankshaft position sensor that Mike (xharleyrider) posted a few days ago... maybe it would be a good idea to add something to the end of the post to make it easy to find with a search like at the end of that post he could add:

CPS crank position sensor failure replace symptom diagnose

You know what I mean? Sometimes people post stuff but don't include all of the keywords or even most of the keywords someone would use to try to find their post later. Like just include words that you think people might use to search for information on that topic. Like if you were going to search for posts people might have made about myself, you might search on words or phrases like: genius "super intelligent" spikes "fast as ****" "dumped it on the dragon" handsome "my hero" witty "da man" mobster "natural born leader" "hand grenade"
Like that. [/emoticons/emotion-2.gif][8D][/emoticons/emotion-4.gif][}/emoticons/emotion-1.gif]

Our second rule says use descriptive titles:

We require that you post topics with the "Subject" line that will capture the attention of the other members. Not only will this help you receive the answers you seek, this also promotes fidelity within the message board. Example's of non-descriptive post are as follows:

"I need help"......
"A question"......
"Some Advice".....
"How do you feel"....
"What would you do"....

Be descriptive, use the "Subject" line to explain what your message is about. The "Subject" line is in fact a short form version of the heart of your message.

"My headlight isnt working"...
"How fast have you gone"...
"How do I route the handlebar wires inside?"...

*Titles Like The Above* BE Specific.

But trying to hit every keyword that you can think of will make it wordy and confusing. If you simple make them descriptive and not something like, "I have a problem....", then it will be easily searchable. You can search by title and by post content, so after a few replies, most of the key words should be present in any given topic.

Besides, good luck getting people to follow anything. We only have a few simple rules to keep this site organized, and it's still nearly a full time job fixing everything. [/emoticons/emotion-1.gif]

Yeah, but the search feature (obviously) lets you search more than just the subject. I figured it couldn't hurt to include a few extra words at the end of the post. What if you're searching on how to remove the front wheel and you search on "remove wheel" in the subject but the one post that has the information in it that you need has "removal of front rim" in the subject? You wouldn't see it. Nitpicky. I know. But it wouldn't hurt to have variations on the words people might be searching for in your post. I already know everything there is to know about this bike so it doesn't affect me. *cough cough* [/emoticons/emotion-1.gif]

when I'm searching, sometimes have to go simple, othewise there's way to much info to sift through. I always search in title first, but sometimes I use the wrong words from what I remember the title was. I just wish people would use the search function first before asking a question that's been answered 1000 times, then I wouldn't have to search through 48 pages of material looking for the one thread that I want. lmao

Searching anything on the internet is definitely an art form. Some people get it, some don't. It's takes a little work and search refinement, but you should be able to find whatever you need to know. I always search the subject line first. If I don't get what I want. I try a few other variations and word changes, then if I still haven't found anything, I try searching for certain phrases in all the text. It takes some time, but is usually effective.

Your idea isn't bad, and I agree would make things more easily found, but no one will do it. We can't even get people to be descriptive with one keyword, much less half a dozen.

What key words should I use to find this thread later if I want too read it again? [/emoticons/emotion-2.gif]

I agree Shag. There is an awful lot of of info here to search through. I can usually find what I am looking for but if people were more descriptive with their thread title it would definatley help.
