Thread Title: Service Manuals by Model Year
Last Update: November 2nd 2012

This thread evolved to discuss:
  • Model Numbers (for Model Year)
  • Model Codes (for Purchasing Parts)
  • Service Manual Publication Numbers.
  • Service Manual Supplement Publication Numbers.
  • Parts Manual Publication Numbers.
Why you need the Model Number and the Model Code:
  • The Model Number is generic across each individual model year.
  • The Model Code indicates each individual Country or Region.
  • Motorcycles often eventually cross international borders.
  • Having the Model Number and Model Code can eliminate problems.
About Service and Parts Manuals:
When ordering a hard-copy Service Manual, be sure its the latest edition containing the 2002 service manual and the 2003 and 2006 supplements so that all model years are covered by a single manual-set. The 2003 and 2006 supplements cover prior ommissions and new changes. The same Service Manual applies to Original and Midnight Warriors. Parts Manuals differ.

About the Factory Build Model Year:
For USA/ISO format VIN's, the best way to verify the factory model year is to decipher the 17-character VIN. To avoid document errors, read the VIN from your motorcycle's frame neck, right side. The 10th character in the VIN is the model year: for example, a '2' indicates a 2002. This carries through 2009 so 10th character is a '9' for 2009 bikes. It appears the 2010 Canadian bikes use the same VIN sequence so for 2010 the 10th character should be the letter 'A' (but this is not verified).

Yamaha also built Warriors that were shipped to a few other countries using an abreviated 11-character Frame Serial Number and the model year character is not represented, and also built a small number of 'special build' Warriors that were shipped direct to buyers in various countries and their Frame Serial Number (VIN) stamped on the motorcycle neck follows an alternate abbreviated format (differences if any are unknown). In these cases it is possible to determine the Build Model Year by comparing the ECU/Engine Code to other Warrior motorcycles because Engine Numbers are assigned (thus serialized) at manufacture. See: http://www.rswarrior.com/forums/13-technical-discussion/170482-about-ecus.html for help.

About the Color Code:
To help you determine the factory color number, see the (usually white) sticker on top of the frame brace under your rider seat, and also note if the 'circle' is filled-in or not. Then see the separate chart (at the bottom of this section) dedicated to original color identification. Note there may be two different 'black' colors for the Midnight Warrior even though Colorrite showns just one color with two different sold-as names assigned by Yamaha. For Original and Midnight Warriors, the frame and engine are the same color but the engine paint may be high-temperature (unknown). The 'black' wheel color varies between Original and Midnight models, and some Midnight model wheels may have slightly different 'black' hues. Additional information organized by Model Year is available at: www dot colorrite dot com. (note two 'r' letters)

--------------------------

About Identifying Parts Correctly:
Use your known Model Year and your Model Code from below (example: 5PX1 or 2D81) to verify your parts are correct at time of order. The Yamaha / Star factory website and many dealer parts websites will indicate newer part number revisions but certain assumptions are often made based on country. For example, the Canadian factory and dealer websites will probably assume 5PX3 (etc) as shown below. So if your Canadian Warrior is now in another country and you visit a local dealer's parts website, you may (or may not) find different part numbers. Resulting problems are unknown.

Why should you consider your bike's 'built' model year and model number and also it's 'sold-as' model year?
  • Because in some countries the 'sold-as' model year is the year the vehicle is sold, not the year it was manufactured.
  • Because some factory shipments went to some countries late in the model year and were sold as the next model year.
  • The model years appear nearly identical except paint, but there were significant changes in 2003, 2004, and 2006.
  • For more information, see the 'Model Year Difference' thread.

hiya - uk bike 2004 still has one piece seat and pegs for passenger not lowered - not an import bike brought into uk by yamaha - now wondering if it's actually a 2003 model - which makes accessory buying a different matter - regards tomba

Excellent point, I've added that to the post above. Your keen observation is very much appreciated.

If your guess is correct then I'm wondering if your 2004 bike is model #XV1700PCR* (where * means there's more characters that might change the color or some other minor feature of the basic model).

Re: Service Manuals by Model Year - (Hey Tom How R Ya?!)

Data updated to include 2006 supplement and 2009 service manual (same as previous). It seems like:

For2002 model year you need just the service manual (supplement helps).

For 2003-2005 you need the 2002 service manual and the 2003 supplement.

For 2006-2009 you need the 2002 service manual and the 2003 supplement and the 2006 supplement (worst case its overkill).

Does this seem right?

Re: Service Manuals by Model Year - (Hey Tom How R Ya?!)

As I read these the P/N LIT-11616-RS-W1 merely means to me that it is a bundle of the service manual and both supplements because when openedthe front pagestill references the service manual part number.

I would also assume that because it has both the 2003 AND the 2006 supplements that there would be information contained in the 2003 supplement that supercedes the service manual but is relevant and therefore not needed to be rewritten into the 2006 supplement. So for 2006-2009 model years you would still need both supplements.

I have not checked all the information contained within to verify any of this.

Hi Tom. The Warrior was only officially brought into the UK in 2002 and 2003. All other years are imports.

How un fair is that.

Of course Tom's 2004 model UK bike is actually a 2003 model USA bike so it looks like maybe there were a few shipped as UK domestic in 2004. Or the dealers sold them as 2004 who knows. But one way or another the 2003 model bike was sold as a 2004 in the UK. They even have the 2003 model number on them, which Tom mentions earlier above.

The result is very positive.Tom and I have the same bike.2003 Titanium metallic (gunmetal) - the fastest Warrior ever built!!

Absolutely correct
[*]titanium is very smooth...but mine does have the faster exhaust..
yup last time i looked yours had fallen off.. now if you need one..and i understand that desire..really i do Mike..i have a spare kindly donated to the BBB's club by ianR....of coursereplacing the lack of chrome with the L&Mdoes help [lol]....but when you arrive in London it'll feel nearly like home

The only thing that's got me puzzled is why did 'they' nick my second horn? and as it happens today, i poked my beak up that gap and could see no wires or connector for it either!!? wtf..

Saw pics of MwUk [adams] new bike yesterday - very clean and still has the bazooka, joy![oh just because adams taking it off anytime soon doesn't count!] - his is an 03 on an 02 plate, has 2 horns but doesn't look titanium a bit paler perhaps [nearly silver] is that a standard colour? bone has looked at it and has 'import' as it's pedigree....Az you still smiling?...i hope!

Hey Tom, I had to go back to model year differences to be sure, I'm getting old.

'03 colors were Liquid Silver Metallic, Titanium Metallic, and Onyx with Indigo flames. There wasn't a midnight version yet. Since those are the only colors showing in parts for replacement bits I'm guessng they are the only colors made by the factory for all countries, but who knows.

The link in the original post (above) has been updated. The new link also leads to a hard-copy purchase option.
[*]
Note: my most recent info is that factory manuals for all model years ship with the 2002 manual as the basis of the document. Separate supplements are added for newer models as needed. At this writing there were two supplements (see list above). Therefore, as long as this remains true, if the price is the same you might consider getting the newest model year maual then simply ignore any supplement that doesn't apply to your model year. Hopefully there is some way to verify before buying.

Also see the 'Popular Mods' post in the Technical forum, and look under 'Manuals' for the e-copy option.

I've seen links to pdf files. I want a hard copy. Does anyone have a go to site to buy motorcycle publications ?

I ordered mine from a dealer several years ago. It's cheaply made, the pages come out too easily. Crappy binding, but it still works, as much as a book "works".
