Just throwing it out there for those that are in the SoCal region. A couple of us are thinking of doing our clutches soon (2 or 3 plate mods with Barnett springs) and was wondering if anyone else local might be interested in either doing theirs or participating in doing ours? Might be a good time to get together, grill some meat, drink some drink, and knock out some mods. I think we could probably work with others to do their mods too if it were something doable in a few hours.

Not sure about what day we'd be doing it but probably in the next 2-3 weeks max.

Thoughts? Interest?

I think we're both planning on changing our oil at the same time so no worries about "leaning to the right".

I'm also aware that the torque on those bolts is super low so we don't break the clutch housing bolt bosses.

I just sent mine in a week ago to get the barrett 3 plate mod and clutch…. I’m not that mechanically skilled….

Chances are you will need a new gasket so have one on hand. Be prepared to spend an hour or more cleaning the old gasket off. The cover is aluminum so you need to be very careful with the scraper/razor.
Leaning the bike to the right will get you a much better look at the work area even if you plan to drop the oil. Even better is a motorcycle jack or lift.

Excellent info. Yeah, figured the scraping could be done by someone attending while the rest of the work is being done. I have at least one gasket in case I need it but I might actually have two.

I have a jack that I was planning to use as I agree, getting it up in the air is the only way to work on it. Since I was going to use my jack, I'd drain the oil. But good point on leaning it even if you do drain the oil.

Some people report no issue at all with the gasket but that wasn't my experience. My bike is in '07 and I did the clutch in 2017 or so and the gasket tore perfectly in half and I had to scrape it off of both sides which took over an hour. A very sharp razor blade and some brillo pads did the trick.

I'm definitely hoping for reusability but mine is an '05 and it's 2022 so we're talking 17 years...

Question: do anyone ever make any kind of mark or indication that the clutch has been done? Either on the housing or the ECU like Ivan does? Maybe we should as a community... and I know, I'm about 20 years too late to get this started, but I have heard of some guys that go to do the Barnett conversion only to find that it's already been done. Can you imagine that frustration of buying everything, then having your gasket rip in half only to find out you didn't need to do it??

If there's a sticker in the Barnett box, I'll definitely be adding it to my ECU just in case anyone else looks at my bike.

I've been on a similar journey. Always watching for the parts I want. Snatching them when I can. I need to sell some of the ones I ended up not needing or didn't work out, but I'm not quite ready to take that on.

Alrighty! Got the ok to host. I told the old lady it’d only be 6 or 8 so don’t everybody make special trips to pack my house; it’s not THAT big. 😜 I’ve updated the subject with the date.

I’m located in Lake Balboa, CA for people to get an idea of where you’re headed. I’ve got a jack that does the job and hand tools; no impact wrench (never NEEDED one) or any other air or electric tools for working on cars/bikes.

We’ll be planning to replace at least two clutches so bring your gasket scrapers. I’ll have a grill and cooler available for those not involved with the clutches. If we’ve got more time after the clutches, I’m happy to keep working on any other mods people want to bring. Otherwise, we can keep tinkering with mine or just relax and enjoy the amazing SoCal weather.

Let me know if you’re likely to make it and I’ll organize the finer details in PM/text/smoke signals.

I am going to be down in the area coaching water polo at a tournament. If I have time, and distance is right I’ll bring some Beers, my hard hat and vest to supervise
