What is the best stuff to use? Anyone know what the different dealers might be using when putting it all back together? And for that matter, can you use synthetic motor oil directly after the rebuild?

There are alot of threads on this one! The RSW tranny shares lube with the engine..it's lubed by engine oil. Opinions on the 'best' will be many. "Middle of the Road" is to run convention oil for the first 600 miles or so to allow the rings to 'seat' then switch to Synthetic. There are quite a number of tests indicating that synthetics transfer heat better (cooler running), flow better (better cold start protection) and have higher shear strength (better bearing and gear protection)over conventional oils. The area I most noticed the change was in shifting... Not all synthetics are alike....the 'standard' to call an oil 'synthetic' isn't really much higher than conventional oils... I run Mobil 1 20W-50 V-twin in the motor, and Amsoil 75W-90 Synthetic gear oil in the transfer case...
