Transfer case oil

There was some talk about what type of engine oil to use but I have a question about the transfer case oil. Is there a difference between the GL-4 hypoid gear oil and the GL-5 oil? Picked up some today and when I looked in the manual it asked for GL-4. Yamaha handed me GL-5. I also noticed the SAE was different. The manual say SAE 80 and the one yamaha gave me says SAE 85-140. Want to make sure the sales guy behind the counter knows what hes doin. I have no idea on any of this. Does it show. Thanks

GL 5 is a higher grade & will work ok.

I was wondering this as well - how often do you have to change the transfer case lube?

RF, At least you're asking the questions instead of letting it slide. We'll be happy to help ya figger it out. I change mine every 6k miles.

i change my transfer case oil at every oil change. overkill??? maybe but a friend of mine was one of the techs that worked on the warrior during testing prior to its release, he said to me for the time and cost involved why not do it at every oil change?

You are right to double check anything those sales guys tell you. I was told by a sales guy, that the engine oil lubricated the transmission. So I removed all the oil from the bike thinking that when I filled the engine with oil the crank case was full too. Thank God I had enough since to read my owners manual! Some of the sales people are great, but some are about as dumb as I am.

im useing redline synthetic & change at 10,000. when it comes out it looks just like the new stuff. also when i switched engine oil to motul 5100 it doesnt clunk but clicks into gear
