Group Buys

I was just thinking. One of the things a diesel motor site does that I belong to is coordinate group buys. Yes I wrench diesels too [/emoticons/emotion-2.gif]

There is a lot of power and marketing advantage related to a group of people with a similar interest. Call it “Target marketing”.

They diesel page basically sets up a forum on the site which is called “Group Buy”. Sellers and buyers use it to offer or get good pricing.

Anyway here is an example of what can happen. A manufacturer came out with a new air filter that was significantly better than the stock one. Performance, mileage etc. Everyone of course wanted one. A person started calling around and asking what type of break he could get on 100 of them. He got a 33% break for 100. Not to shabby.

Next a parts store took notice. He started offering discounts to members on group buys for other items. Oil filters, Pipes, etc. Some time has passed and now there are many resellers and dealers offering discounts.

They all tend to work a bit different. Some dealers need 100 orders from the group before they will ship. Some need 10 orders. Some will just ship with the discount if you are a forum member.

There used to be a Honda dealer that just flat out gave 30% off Hondaline stuff to a Gold Wing forum too. He just advertised there (the site let him do this for free in exchange for the discount) and received a ton of business. The relationship got to be so good that you could email the guy and he would send you stuff with an invoice. You paid AFTER you got the stuff.

My point is that maybe it would be a good idea to start using the power of this forum in that manner. Below I list some items that have worked for the diesel page and might be good for group buys here:

The new V&H Big Shot pipe
Darkstar's Gel seat mod or seats
Windshields
Tires (Lord knows Sangathor will do 100 himself)[/emoticons/emotion-2.gif]
Krankvent
BAK kit
General maintenance items…Oil filters, fluids etc.
Painting
PC 3's or chips

It would take some coordination by individuals and perhaps and area on the forum. But that would be about it.

P.S. I do not sell motorcycle related items. My motivations are not to make money from the forum on this idea.

U4EA,
We have tried this and from what I can remember only succeded three times. Once with the custom insert for the pulley and another for the integrated turnsignals. This is a tough thing to do, cause most manufacturer's would want $$$$ to follow through with the deal which would mean pooling up a collection and order unless the vendor would deal directly with us as individuals. A good example was when we all decided to get the custom plate made. It was done on an individual basis. We had to mention rswarrior.com for the price break. This is a great ideal and would be great if we found the proper individual to take charge, organize and contact prospective vendor's of interest. Great Ideal, but a lot of work.

I agree Darkstar,
When I was talking to the lincese plate people they wanted me to order a bunch of them and then I would need to sell them to the members. I did not want this responsibility, so after a little talking they agreeded to handle the items on a case by case basis.

If a company wants to do this all they need to do is email me and I can set something up for them.

I checked into doing the custom side brackets, but every fabricater wanted a quantity order prior to manufacturing. This would mean money out of my pocket up front. Unless, I had members or anyone interested with the complete understanding that they would be paying up front, pooling cash together with all other interested members, then placing a worthy order. I would not do something like this for 5 brackets. I never felt comfortable in working in this manner, especially with folks I have never meet, but then I am not going to put my money up front and place a order for 20 brackets and have 10 bag out on me. You get the picture.

U,

I think it is a great idea. But, at 600 members across the country, and world, we are a bit of a small group. How many members are on your diesel forum? Maybe by this next summer, and the forum grows even more rapidly, we will be able to accomplish those goals.

One way to do this is to let retailers post on this site only if they offer a certain percentage discount(10 to 20 % minimum) to its members.

Depending on the size of the retailer, most have some advertising budget established. The retailer could reach its potential market, not by paying for advertising, but by offering a discount.

This would mean closely regulating any company who wanted their name mentioned in anyway on this site. Many post here for free.

Rather than chasing the retailers, let them chase us. With 600 members, any savey business person would gladly offer a discount to directly market to this captive audience.

This idea can be expanded with some brainstorming.

Your right Darkstar. It is a lot of work. Maybe the forum is a little too small right now. Vendors will offer discounts if they see volume.

Special run items (like a custome pulley cover) are much more difficult than oil filters or pipes.

I think Dnack's onto something here. Especially with dealers or manufacturers selling the stuff most of us want. Like porn - er, I mean, V&H pipes. Give 'em free advertizing in a very tightly targeted market. They make sales, we get deals! Oh! What GENius! [/emoticons/emotion-5.gif]

Tires are a prime candidate for discounts. However, it is best if there is only one or two tire choices.

Does anyone know if the Warrior tires fit any other bikes? If so what ones?

I ask the above because the diesel forum (mentioned in the original post) joined forces with a few other forums to get a discount on an additive. We may want to consider this type of move too. The more people you have ....the bigger the discount.

I took a look at the vendor forum here and at other sites.

I feel the discount numbers we should shoot for are 15 to 25%. That is typical on other boards. On 100 $7 oil filters they are getting 15 to 25%.

Tires are around 20 to 25%. One dealer has a drop ship from the manufacturer agreement. He places the order and the manufacturer ships direct to his customer. Saves one round of shipping. Nice deal...dealer never touches the product.
