What's wrong with me?

I keep seeing these posts about you guys scraping your pegs and your mounts. My bike has the flip 'n grind so it should be even easier for me to drag, yet I can't seem to do it. I have curvy roads where I live, so what's my problem? My chicken strips on the rear tire are getting smaller, maybe 1/2" wide or less.

I wish I had someone experienced to ride with who could observe my technique and tell me how to safely get further over. I love the bike and don't want to have it slide out from under me, but I know I can touch the pegs. What do I need to do?

I've scraped pegs and my old exhaust many times before. However, on my new setup I have only scraped pegs and my boots but not my exhaust. I kinda like it that way....and yes, there is about a 1/4-1/2"of chicken strip left on my rear...it's really no big deal to me. It also depends on the profile of the tire as well. Some have a much more rounded profile which makes it easier to corner and transition. My VenomR 250 sits a little flatter with a more drastic slope near the edge making it a little trickier...Anyhoo - I grew up on sportbikes and it got old for me. I don;t put all that $$ into my bike only to grind it up. I can ride and turn fine for it's intended purpose without grinding major parts and having to deal with that over time..... to me it's about getting the right tools for the job. I like to cruise, yeah maybe even power cruise on my Warrior. If I wanted motogp, I'd get a superbike....I like when folks talk crap about it and then go riding with me.....

BTW, here's a little inspiration....most of what everyone is talking about you should do is in this pic...also, notice how his shoulders remain parrallel to the plane of the bars...people tend to lean their bike more than they need to for the particular turn and they think scraping or leaning too much on a pee-wee turn is doing it right....

after my trip to n.c. and tenesee i could grind pegs on most corners if i wanted. Its all about comfort. I have ground my exhaust and frame. the frame is kinda skary cause once that hits is slides your rear end out and feels like it lifts up. You will get it soon enough. I could drag on flat corners, up hill, down hill, even at regular turn lanes.

To maximize speed thru a corner you want to hang your body off the inside of the bike. If people did this most of them wouldn't scape too often either. Watch a motorcycle race sometime and note their body position in corners. They do that to maximize speed at a given lean angle. Note: you don't have to do it to the extent they do for it to have an effect.

Try this on a bike with Forward Controls (ie: not stock)...

I'm 6'2" and Might be able to move on my seat about 1"... unless I take one foot off the peg... and even then you will be moving your weight around by using your upper body (which is very dangerous) instead of your legs because of the foot position gives you NO leverage/Push.

Fortunately, I'm short and with a low pull back bar, some gel seat spacers, and floorboards, the Warrior fits me almost like a UJM. I know what you mean though, with its stock forward pegs, I felt the same way on the Warrior.

It is true that that earlier bikes ('02,'03 and maybe '04) had higher footpegs than the newer bikes. On the newer ones the footpeg brackets sit lower...but the pavement feeler pegs are shorter on the newer ones also. Lisa ( Hotwarrior) has the back of her '03 lowered and has scraped her pegs on several occasions.

I put the earlier brackets on my '05 when I upgraded from the '02 because they were just too low and I was dragging the pegs ( and my boots) all the time !!

Hasn't helped me any. I have an 02, with a 1100# spring and stock height and I am missing all of my peg feelers plus the ends of my pegs and the tips of my floorboards. I've ground off the baffle mounting hardware on the propipe and I actually dragged the lower tip right off of my old Samsons on my first run through the Dragon at WF2. Almost hit Shizznizzle in the head with it.

I've been beating on mine for 7 years though. I seem to remember not scraping anything for the first year or so. Now I scrape several times everyday on the way to and from work. Except when it's raining, then I slow down a bit.

You'll get it when you're ready. Don't force it.

BTW, I should also mention that I wear an armored leather jacket, full face helmet, jeans, boots and titanium armored gloves everyday. Even when it's 90 degrees out and I'm sweating my nutz off. I believe in freedom of choice, but I also believe that if you ride like an a'hole, you better dress for the crash. Cause sometimes you scrape more than just the pegs.

I am a little reckless....I'm in my 30's and I had colon cancer this year and for a time, I thought I might die. After the docs fixed me up, I decided that I didn't want to arrive at my casket in good working order, but a little ragged out and broken down. No one lives forever and I'm not going to try to. I'm just trying to find a balance between living a full life and foolishly throwing it away.
Glad to hear that you've mended up. That's a tough one and I'll be sure to add you to my prayer list. The only thing wrong with the flip-n-grind is that it's not adjustable. I have adjustable links and they've been great in not only dealing with possible scraping, they have also helped in adjusting the fat tire to fit the rear fender.

You need to just take it easy and get used to the Warrior. I've been riding since I was 12 years old so that's 48 years. I still don't know it all and usually ride a bit below my limits. I'm already ragged and broken down enough.

to answer the question of whats wrong with you..maybe your father never loved you?the first time i scraped my pegs it scared me. now i just lean as far as i feel like it. i still scape the pegs all the time though and mine is stock hight. im 6'3 and i dont want mine any lower.i dont think i could turn without scraping if it were lowered.

Are you sure Pep? I'm thinking maybe we actually do know it all but just can't remember most of it.

See the two ridesI have posted in the mid atlantic section. I will fix you and that car tire you have on the rear.

And plan to come to WarriorFest V or Return to the Dragon 4. You will either scape pegs or bike afterwards. And don't worry, if you scape bike, someone will have some Kitty Boo Boo stickers for you to cover the scapes.

For me, it was afterriding behind Frankenstien, OhioMike,CruiseMissle and GarnerWarrior (2up)before I learned how much more the Warriorcan lean.

Now for the question on what's wrong with you, I do not know you well enough but it appears to be several things.

Maybe it's just not how you roll. Be careful of what you wish for. Next thing you know you'll be scraping away valuable parts...

ive had my warrior for over a year and i just started to lean it enough to scrape my heel. the first time i did it, it was by mistake and my heel caught the floor and flew backwards almost snapping my ankle, hurt like ****. now when i corner i pull my heel up to make sure that doesnt happen again.

i also live in the city so there is barely anywhere i can speed through turns without being worried about illegally parked cars or morons coming at me. even in the mountain areas when i go for trips i have a hard time flying through turns for fear of deer or other bad drivers.

Oh yeah... At first I was gonna say to not worry about it because we need someone to ride slow and strap a few cases of beer to the back of their bikes and meet us back at camp... But then I remembered the day Dwight (Garnerwarrior) strapped a couple of cases of beer on the back of his bike before we headed back to camp. JDPark and I were both on sport bikes... and JD on a FZ1 and I was on a GSX-R750... and MarineWarrior was there on his Warrior. We all took off and MarineWarrior blew by JD and I on a straight-away so we decided to show him "the deal" and passed him on some long sweepers doing around 140-150 mph. Soon afterwards we pulled into camp at The Kickstand. We had barely come to a stop when Dwight pulled up with a big ol' grin on his face and all of the beer still intact strapped to the back of his bike looking around like a puppy dog "What's gonna happen now, huh? Can we drink the frosty beers now? Huh?" HUH? Still haven't quite figured out how he pulled that off. *scratches head* We were riding faster than a Warrior is theoretically possible of riding unless it's falling off of a cliff, but somehow Dwight was still RIGHT THERE with multiple cases of ice cold beer on the back of his bike. HAHAHAHA! I love that guy!
