The new FJR has a new electric shift and no clutch lever. So how do a burnout? "FJR1300AE receives, in addition to the other `06 refinements listed, heated grips and a Yamaha exclusive electric-shift five-speed transmission that eliminates the clutch lever entirely—now you can click off supersmooth shifts using either the left bar-mounted paddles or the foot-operated gearshift lever.
Yamaha brings another industry first – a computer operated clutch and electronic shift actuators, eliminate the need to operate the clutch and improves shift effort."

I sure hope this is not a trend. At least it's only an option (that costs money, too). Maybe it'll go over like the lead baloon it is, and Yamaha will flush it.

I will occasionally feather the clutch. It's not always completely "on" or "off". Any little bit of control they take away from me is a bad thing IMO. Linked, anti-lock, or power brakes? No thanks either. Those buttons don't look easy to reach while pulling out of a curve. The new '06 FJRs all have anti-lock and linked brakes. A new one is OFF my list. That's a shame. Yamaha screwed up one of the best bikes made...

Wow, that really sucks!!! That just took the FJR all the way off my list as well. ABS I won't say anything bad about until I try it. But the linked thing sucks! I seriously hope this doesn't start going to other bikes as well.

I hope there is some sort of centrifugal mechanism that disengages the clutch when you're pulling up to a light or it could get a little hairy trying to find neutral...

this is just an option. you can still order a regular shifting fjr. and yes it will be a trend, honda is coming out with electric shift bikes also soon.

That's right; there are two versions of the 06 FJR available...conventional and the electric shift.
the linked ABS however is on both bikes.
I cannot believe the retro-rocket action of the ABS anchors on my FJR when you jump on the binders. Of course they are not linked on any of the past Feejers.

Why shift at all? They should go straight to Automatic Transmission, dual front air bags and ABS. Cup holders would be nice and don't forget the Vanity Mirror........oh wait, that's my min-van. Never mind. Adding on SUCK sure is easy.

I'm not a real big fan of ABS on bikes. They are pretty good for touring-type bikes, I suppose. They give consistant performance. Not the best, but decent grab power. Just don't get on marginal traction... gravel, wet, etc... They can be over zealous with the cutting out mode.

A buddy of mine is one of the Instructors for the local, Metro Atlanta PD. They are transitioning from Harleys to Beemers. The change of Marques is not very popular. The Beemers have ABS, power brakes. The Harleys, not. My friend was able to stop more quickly on the Harley. This is a Harley, remember. Imagine what modern brakes and suspension could have done with a skilled pilot on board.... ABS puts a computer in charge of what a human should be doing.

I'd vote for more practice and forego the gadgets.
