Just did the oil change this morning and thought I'd share....First thing I did was ride the bike for about 15 mins around the block to loosen up the oil.

1. This is where the oil goes in..

2. I switched to Mobil 1 from Amsoil. I didnt feel like looking for the amsoil secret society so I just went to walmart. Plus I heard its just as good.

3. Over to the front left side of the bike, you will see the 1st drain plug (I have the wrench on it).
It is 17mm, if its not, do not remove it.

4. While your there, remove the filter as well;

5. Now the rear drain plug....Again it is 17mm!

6. I measured how much came out by putting the drained oil into an empty 5 qt container. As you can see 4.5 qt came out, and thats what I put back in.

******After filling her with 2.5 qts, start her up for about 10 secs and fill in the rest. And make sure you tighten everything back******

I think most of us measure how much oil we remove, and assuming none was puked-out the overflow or burned along the way its a good way to do it. But after an oil change the only way to know if a dry-sump is properly filled is to ride it to actually get all the ol warm and then check the level as shown in the video (see the Sticky post in The Welcome Mat).

Oil level

Ok Got home from work a 20 minute ride and checked the oil level again it was high. Had to drain 8oz's. That put me just about an 1/8" below the full mark. I put in a total 5 qts and 4oz's. So minus the 8oz's I took out, that puts me at 4qt's and 28oz's. Just about 5qt's.

Again that was me leaning the bike over on each side to get as much oil as I could get out.

I think I read somewhere in the post that the oil needs to expend so that you get an accurate reading. Also watched the video and it does show in the middle of the dip stick is the optimum level.

Hope this helps anybody else on their first oil change.

I'll give a SITREP (Army slang for Situation Report) tomorrow if I have to siphon any more out.

Until then... "Keep on rollin' baby"

What is your secret, do you have an external oil cooler that isn't shown in your Album? If you are checking your oil level according to the video for a dry sump motor then forgive me but I don't understand why you are installing 5 Liters (5.3 Quarts) for an oil change when that overfills the system when the motor is operating. The service manual shows the total system contains 5 Liters but that's if you tear the motor down and rebuild it. Doing an oil change its hard to get every drop out of the motor even running it for a few seconds. Most people get a 'full' reading at about the 4.1-Liters (4.3 Quarts). I use a longer oil filter but that only gets a bit more oil.

Oil level

SITREP:

Ok got home today and had to take out more oil, lol. Another 8oz's that put me a 1/4" below the full line. So now I'm at 4 1/2 qts. for the oil change w/filter.

So I'm thinking when the tutorial says to go for a 15min ride it means 5th gear 60-70 MPH. Not a mix of low and high speeds. Hum?

Doesn't matter, just normal riding so the oil fully circulates several times and gets warm enough. Then its important to NOT rev it before shutting off the motor, which by now you know why that is important from the video.

Oil Level

I didn't rev it before/during a 30 second idle. I followed the directions as posted. I not sure why it took a day to get the oil level to come up. I initially
added the 4.3 ish but like I said in the beginning of my post the oil barely came up to the bottom of the dip stick, And that worried me so I kept on adding oil until I got a full reading. Next oil change I'm gonna just add the 4.3 and call it good.

This was obviously my first oil change with this bike, a little trial and error for my own piece mind.

Again the write up was spot on. Thx for all the comments and suggestions.

I haven't gone through this whole thread, so this already may be covered. I just changed the oil in my 'new' (to me) '02 Warrior. I added the oil as directed (I do have the manual), and after 5 qts, it still doesn't make it up to the dipstick. At all. I'm afraid to add too much more, but it looks like it could take another 1/2 qt. The quantity with filter was supposed to be 4.3. What am I missing?

ride it for 10 min then check

Thanks for rehashing all of this guys. I had changed the oil and didn't understand why the quantity wasn't coming up. I was worried about taking it on the road without enough oil. The last thing I wanted to do was burn up the motor.

I had planned to ride first thing this morning, and freaked and posted before going through the whole thread.

Thanks again!

We should try and get these pictures re posted. Maybe the op can edit them and upload them or someone else has them and a moderator can edit them.

Darkside, you can edit your first post using Go Advanced then delete the broken url's and then upload the original pics using Manage Attachments. This puts the images in as attachments. Save it then open in Go Advanced again. Then right click each pic and copy its forum URL and paste it into the post where the old broken URL was positioned.

Just a clarification, this is Redbullssg (Stan), not See... Still can't get in.

Anyway, been a while since I've done an oil change on the bike, it's been in storage for a few years. I changed it before I stored it, so the oil looked great still, but, did it anyway. Like I said, it's been a while, so had to try to remember the ropes. I rode it for a bit, let idle for 30 seconds or so, but the rest was a fog, lmao guess I'm getting old. I drained the front plug, and the filter. Went to drain the rear plug and was trying to remember, for some reason, I didn't remember changing socket sizes for the rear, but I removed the oil tank lower tube plug (10mm) and soon as I did, I was like, that's not right. Nothing came out, but just a trickle. Anyway, move to the correct one, drained the rest..

Now, I could kinda remeber it was under 5 quarts, because I'd always have some left over, and put it on the shelf for next change. But after filling with 4.5, then running for a while, and checking the level again, it didn't even touch the bottom of the dipstick. Looking down inside, it was really low looking.. I could, I am pretty sure, put another quart in there before it would be half way on the dipstick. But, I knew 5 quarts is not right....

Came to my trust forum, missing this place... Anyway, now I'm sure I was right after reading through, but do not understand why it's not showing on the stick right. I'll ride it and check again, but I do not ever remeber dojng that before. I'm wondering if by pulling the 10mm plug, it released a vacuum and more drained out the rear than normal... Guess I'll find out when ride it and recheck.
