I'm freaking bummed out. I was trying to set the correct tensions and align my 280 rear because I was hearing some squeaking noise on my front pulley. It took me several tries to get the correct tension but I got it where I was satisfied.( by the way thank you arizona for the insightful write-up) I loosened the axle bolt several times because I wanted to see the best possible alignment I could get. Well the third time I tried taking the nut off it wouldn't turn. So I forced it and I ended up chiseling through the left adjuster plate( see picture below). Not only is the adjuster plate useless but I can't turn the axel nut off, It's definitely seized. Before this becomes a novel. Anyone have a suggestion on how to take off a stripped Axle bolt or nut off?

can you slip an open end box wrench on the axle, and then your regular closed wrench on the nut and take it off that way?

Otherwise, you could most likely use a good nut splitter on it. Probably have to do it on a couple of sides. That might also save the axle. If you force the nut off, it might strip the crap out of your threads. It may be toast already, but it's cheaper to buy a nut than an axle and the nut if you can get away with it.

If you have access to a welder you could weld or have a buddy weld a nut to the side of the axle and use a wrench on it and some heat on the siezed nut and twist it off, a little propane or map gas torch would work great and they are cheap,
Also there is a axle on eBay for like $10.00 with the adjuster plates as I recall

What were you trying to torque the nut to in between adjustments?

From what I can see in the pics, you've possibly galled the threads and they are now just about locked.

Because of the damage to the axle block side of things, I'd personally cut it all off and replace the axle, block, and nut.

I torqued it at 110lbs per manual. Then I need to take it off to make another adjustment in alignment and in the process it got stuck. I forced it and it ended up eating up the block side of the axle.

Any on have ideas how to grind off the nut or axle bolt side? Which side would be better to grind or is there another way?

Thanks

Hey G,

Sorry to make your Sunday a work day. I'll C U 2morrow and hopefully we can get the bolt off. I don't really mind getting a new axle and nut. They are priced reasonably. The only problem is I don't think I'll get them in time for our ride. Keep you fingers crossed.

BTW. Is it OK if you bring a grinder or what ever tool may help in fixing the bolt.

Thanks
