+1 with Churchkey thank you for posting this it is important we all remember this. And in the vast majority of cases the CPS condition worsens then fails and that is where the bike gets towed from. There are a few LAS cases too but the CPS is for sure the most common cause of this symptom especially on early bikes. A search for CPS will yield photo threads documenting what to look for to know for sure.

3000 rpm issues are normally the crank position sensor it is located behind the clutch cover.

I have a few NOS crank sensors with a cover gasket PM me if you want one.
