The Art of Internal Wiring

Guys,

I recently finished the internal wiring on my new Tucker Rocky TT bars. I will never again wire another bike again in my life!!! That was the most strenuous job on a bike I have ever done. Looking back I would have done some things different. I for one cut the wire at the controls, so I had to splice all the wires twice because of the extensions needed. The running of the wires thru the bars was actually really simple. I didnt have any bakers string or Floss, so I used a string I had from some 50 lb dogfood I had just opened. I covered all the holes that werent being used and with the help of a shop vac and WALAH! I tied it to a single strand 14 gauge wire and the pulling was EASY. All the splicing was a PITA. I will get some pics but my camera was out of battery. It does feel good to see the finished product and know you did it yourself. I also installed Lightning Forward Extensions, and ISO Flame Grips.

I had about 30 hours into my last internal wiring, and then wrecked that Warrior, I swore I would never do it again, but it just looks so **** good. Argghhhh!!! I think for sure I'll run the wires through while siting inside on the couch like ekmaint - while having a few adult beverages.

Chex, hated doing mine too and now I dont even use the bars. At least you can say you did it.

Ray, Save yourself the trouble, I have a set of Barons Radius bars that I might sell for the right price. They are internally wired and have the clutch perch on the bars and both left and right controls.

Good job. I have yet to tackle internal wiring myself, because I've heard it's a b*tch, so kudos to you. Do you have any pics of the bars itself, or maybe a link? How much did you pick them up for? Are they 1 1/4" or 1 1/2"? Inquiring minds want to know.

Pics? If no takers, I may want your bars. theres no way I am going to try to tackle internal wiring myself. It took me 3 days just to put on my new gear shifter and rear brake control. lol- BEN

I thouoght about soldering it, but I have no experience in that. I only twisted the wires back together at the controls but was long enough to put it back in the bars, but I heat shrunk everything to where it was clean but wasnt too fat to get back in the bar holes. I was going to use butt connectors but that is way to big. Then I slowly pulled each wire down while keeping the tension off the edges of the holes at the trees.

Doesn't take much to solder, and you can get one at RadioShack. Don't be like me and tape the trigger down and place in a vice to save yourself time though, it ends up burning up the unit. Doh!!! At least there not that expensive.

I wired the Barons 1.25 inch Radius Bars onto my bike. I felt I definitely had to solder ALL the wire connections. Soldering is relatively easy with a little practice. Be sure you get good 'flow'. I see a lot of soldering that did not 'flow' well and they are problems waiting to happen. I had to add 13 inches of extension to each wire. You need to do one wire at a time and stagger the placement of the solder joint. If you do the soldering all at one place, the bundle will be too wide to get through the bars.

I love em, they look really good (I have heard they are referred to as "Teeth Eaters") fair assessment, but I like 'em. Take your time and be sure to heatshrink all connections and you will be pleased.

Well worth the effort.....
