This Original Post has been cleaned-up removing some of the early questions I had asked in favor of providing the known details.

Among other numbers molded into the ECU case:
  • We found that all known 2002 ECU's have the number 5PX-00 molded into them.
  • We found that all known 2003+ ECU's have the number 5PX-01 molded into them.
  • We found that all known Speedstar ECU's have the number 5PX-70 molded into them.
Part of the reason for investigating this is to help identify Model Year (Yamaha factory build year) for Warrior motorcycles delivered without USA/ISO format 17-character VIN's. Additionally, out of curiosity, it can answer the age-old question 'how many RS Warriors were built?' because the engines for Original and Midnight Warriors come off the same production line.

If you have not posted here alrerady, please:
Check your Frame Neck's 17-character VIN to identify the Model Year.
For 11-character VIN (Frame Number) and Special Build Frame Numbers, see: https://www.rswarrior.com/forums/13-technical-discussion/147350-service-manuals-model-year.html
Check the sticker on your ECU (or the engine case) for your Engine Number.

The Engine Number sequence is as follows (example): P611E-0006999 / *35P611E0006999*

Thanks to all who can participate. I know we all look forward to what-ever we might learn!

Results to Date:

Here's the 'Engine Numbers' from either the ECU or the Engine case, separated by model year.
Some have been posted here, and some have been received from other confirmed sources.
This information has been copied here from the original location toward the end of the thread.

2010: (Canada only) (none participating yet)

2011: (New Zealand only): (none participating yet) (Believed to be 2009's)

Why is this helpful? See: https://www.rswarrior.com/forums/13-technical-discussion/147350-service-manuals-model-year.html

Note1: No data has been provided for Speedstar ECU since there is no Engine Number information on them.

Has anyone heard or read this detail, I'm looking for confirmation or clarification if there is any difference between the ECU's in 2002 bikes versus 2003+ bikes. There was a part# change in 2003 however that could indicate a minor compatible improvement, or a non-compatible change.

Here's where I am on this. I've recently been told that for USA bikes:

The 2002 Warrior, which has CDI Ignition and is shown as using ECU Part# 5PX-8591A-00-00, should have 5PX-01 molded into the ECU. This appears to be supported by the 2002 Parts Manual.

The 2003+ Warriors, which have TCI Ignition and are shown using ECU Part# 5PX-8591A-01-00, supposedly should have 5PX-04 molded into the ECU. This appears to 'possibly' be supported by the 2003 Parts Manual, but in fact its sorta cloudy and indirect.

So I checked my 2003 which has TCI, and my 2003 ECU has 5PX-01 molded into it.

Would it be asking too much if a few guys would look under their seat, and post what model year they have, and what numbers are molded into the plastic case? These are molded on the opposite side from the white "Engine" label and bar code sticker.

Mine is a 2003, and has these numbers molded: F8T914 73 5PX-01 2905
The sticker on the otther side states Engine# P611E-0006447 / *35P611E0006447*

I have a spare ECU with these numbers molded into it: F8T914 73 5PX-01 4216 (not sure what model year it came from).
The sticker on the other side states Engine# P611E-0011691 / *35P611E001691U*

Thanks to all who can participate. I appreciate the assist, and look forward to what-ever we might learn!
Prof - i have 2 ecu's - my bike is a uk opfficial 2003 so i'll check that one ..the other spare was from a bike Gav knew of [not sure which year] but i'll take a deko - jason's is an import 2005 so that might be interesting, and stew is another 2003 official bike like mine...let you know...new sport spotting the ECU lol:D

Thanks! It will be nice to confirm if the ECU is indeed universal across borders and model years! One day, possibly, this will be handy for those like us who intend to keep this beast a very long time.

2004 California model
Top side of ECU-
F8T914 73 5PX-01 4317

Bottom side of ECU-
Engine# P611E-0011997/35P611E0011997$*

No * at the beginning of ^ but I have a $* at the end? Any idea what that signifies?

Great start, hope you'll all keep 'em coming.
So far:
It appears our Engine Model Number is 35P611E, maybe?
It appears the ECU's for USA49 and California are all 5PX-01. [added: there's one 5PX-00]
It could be the ECU's for the UK Official Imports differ . . . we will see.
It could be the ECU's for the UK Grey Imports are also 5PX-01, we will see.
Maybe Bruce and some other Canadian guys will chime in w/data?
I wonder if the 4-digits after 5PX-01 mean anything?

Oh, jff:
The engine numbers ending in S are a factory speedstar build, less exhaust.
The engine numbers ending in $ have factory enhancements (part speedstar).
OK that's a lie, "jff" = just for fun I have no idea so might as well have fun hehe.

Engine numbers with an S, now that would be fun.... but
I'm still trying to figgure out where I got the CDI.

Here you go 1256day:

Speedstar ECU:

F8T914
72 5PX-70
6908
(no sticker currently on the underside)

'05 ECU:

F8T914
73 5PX-01
4611
Engine # P611E-0012497
*35P611E00124972*

ECU on Lisa's '03:

F8T914
73 5PX-01
2X28
Engine # P611E-0006836
Bar code #'s too faded to read.

All of these bikes and the Speedstar ECU were purchased in the US. None appear to be California models.

For what it's worth , I would guess that AZwarrior's spare is an '04 model.

This deduction is based on the info above that shows that the later the year , the higher the portion of the engine # that I highlight in red below
Engine # P611E-0012497

I suspect that this is the actual sequential engine # as relates to when and how many have been built. I don't know if they started at '1'.

The # on AZ's spare is closest to 04 Indigo's # as seen above.

:D It sounds like we were both doing the same mental gymnastics! It also occurred to me its maybe possible to determine how many Warriors were produced by using this sequential engine number. Hopefully someone with a 2009 will post and the sequential number will follow suit lol. The Road Star jugs differ, but I don't know if the MT-01 engine is 100% identical and if that might muddy the water do you think?

So you have a 2002 model year beast? You can google "CDI" or "Capacitive Discharge Ignition" and also "TCI" or "Transistor Controlled Ignition" to see what's what. Or, for a snap-view, here's the difference (you can see they are both good systems):
SportDevices. CDI and TCI ignitions.

BTW you saw I was joking about the 's' and '$' in the code . . . right . . . :D

Not to take this post off track i'll start a new thread this evening to support what follows with irrefutable proof by this writer :D
  • 2002 Warrior build is NOT CDI ignition ... it is TCI ignition and any information on the www or published by Yamaha is a misprint!
  • All Warrior ECU's are created equal. The 2002 ECU has been superceded by a new P/N as listed above by the OP.
    • There is no such thing as a CA electronic control unit
A&W ... Just send me a pm if you would like me to include this info within your thread and i'll be happy to oblige you and the community :)

Of course. Everyone's participation toward the goal of discovering if all stock ECU's are interchangeable for all model years is welcome and appreciated. It will be ideal to confirm actual field ECU verifications from several international source-bikes that the stock Warrior ECU is the same everywhere. I think Tomba, and others, are going to add their info soon.

Yes, from data already shared, it seems likely the California bikes shipped with the same ECU as the USA49. That is a good indicator.

I look forward to a few Canadian guys who bought Canadian model bikes and a few UK guys with both 'official' and 'grey' imports posting their data, which will probably still show the same 5PX-01 number but let's let them confirm.

You are of course welcome to post the CDI/TCI information here too because that Yamaha information was a factor in the "muddy water" leading to my original ECU question. I'm not sure why but it doesn't surprise me to learn the 2002 is also TCI, probably because the original service manual indicates TCI, and the 2003 supplement doesn't seem to indicate change. But being cautious due to a part# revision, and knowing the service manual has a few errors, helped tailor my original post.

If you happen to know what change in the ECU triggered the 2003+ part# revision, I'm interested in that too, especially to the extent it helps clarify the original question here.

Separate from this, from Bruce's post, the S* ECU has the number is 5PX-70 molded into its case, which will also be helpful over the years for many.

:)

I sorta thought it was maybe a typo, did you re-check to be sure your 2002 ECU has the number "5PX-00" molded into the ECU plastic body? This would be a surprising development. May I also ask what two variants of the Engine Number are on the white Engine Number sticker? Thanks.

Wow, the 261st engine built! Cool.
I suppose it makes sense that the engines built earlier than yours had 5PX-00 also, and probably some later. I'm pretty much sold that they are all interchangable.
To this point, if we see an ECU marked 5PX-00 or 5PX-01 its likely a match for all model year Warriors. Oh, and 5PX-70 for the Speedstar kit.

thanks on the paint code info but my ecu number is still diffrent all your posts say they are all 5px-01 mine is 5px-00 where did that come from.
60ftgap .... when the cards are shuffled i suspect this will be the results ;)
........... no worry & you have a great looking ride :)
  • 2002 Build is 5px-00 = 5PX-8591A-00-00
  • 2003 & up is 5px-01 = 5PX-8591A-01-00

Yes, that makes sense. I think we are down to letting the UK and Canadian guys add their stuff if they want to be sure. Plus the engine sequence numbers are sorta interesting.

I hope several USA guys with 2007's chime in because it looks like possibly the factory started over with engine numbers when the Star name was started in 2008 (but not confirmed).

I also hope several USA guys with 2009's chime-in because we could get a read on total numbers by adding the highest known 2007 engine sequence number to the highest known 2009 engine sequence number. Trivia maybe, but it could answer a question we've been asking for years lol.

UK calling US, I now have the results for a 2003 UK spec Warrior ECU...Lol :) :)

top side of ECU, moulded in,

F8T914
73 5PX - 01
3128

Other side on white barcode paper.

P611E - 0007746

Bladerunr's 2002 is engine #5129 and ECU is 5PX-00.
ArizonaWarrior's (my) 2003 is engine # 6447 and 5PX-01.
From that, its possible all 2002 ECU's happen to use 5PX-00.
But its pretty certain they are all interchangeable . . .

Its looking certain all the UK bikes are 5PX-01, both official and grey-imports.
No word on the official Canadian bikes yet, so lets just say its likely all are 5PX-01.

I hope we get a lot more replies because we can possibly work-out model years based on engine number ranges, and also possibly a total number of bikes sold.
